Galatasaray (H) | CL | Post-Match Thread

Lol. Do you seriously think we play attacking football? Do we use the pace of our wingers or Haaland? Do we look to fully utilise the best striker in the world in general? Do we have lots of shots from outside the area? Do we work on, and score lots from, set pieces? Do we look for lots of through balls? Do we generally make lots of offensive minded forward passes?

I'd say we do virtually none of the above.

If you think that is attacking football then we'll have to disagree.

I don't call having our fullbacks camped on the edge of the opposition box, making endless sideways or backwards passes before losing possession, then being caught out of position attacking football.
The proof of the pudding’s in the eating …. top scorers, Big Erl top individual scorer

I agree with your set pieces point but the rest of your opening paragraph seems a bit naive and outdated in some respects. It’s not as easy as giving it to pacy wingers to get to the byline and pull it back for our towering centre forward … it’s not 1956 mate, the game’s moved on. Defenders and tactics are so advanced now that you need subtlety and nuance beyond any normal fan’s comprehension to break teams down with the regularity that we do. Through balls and long shots are fine when they pay off but they invariably don’t and so we lose possession. Pep’s paid £20m a year or whatever cos he’s a fucking genius and creates an incredibly complex possession based system that’s more effective than gung ho all guns blazing attacking football.

“Endless sideways or backward passes” to use a boxing analogy are crucial in dismantling our opponents …. jab, feint, move in, move out, jab etc etc etc all helps to walk your opponent on to a shot. Walking in in a straight line throwing haymakers won’t get you far against a sophisticated defence.

Agree 100%, but there was a danger on Wednesday (and the fans were equally guilty) of City drifting and going through the motions, when 3-0 or 4-0 would have seen us leapfrog other teams, and not have to worry about Real Madrid equalising

One bloke behind me actually uttered; "If Madrid score we're fucked" and yet there was still plenty of time for the players to grasp control, which to be fair, never happened

At one point I was even envisaging an Alan Ball moment with Bernardo taking the ball to the corner flag, not realising that we needed another goal.
I take your point and if it was set in stone that we had to score a 3rd or a 4th then yeah I’d agree let’s grab hold of the game and try and do that.

But there were many permutations involved here so I think it was sensible to do what we did and manage the game to ensure we got the points and let goal difference elsewhere take care of itself.

We're done here with your patronising and condescending attitude. If you can't see how our style of play has deteriorated, or that Haaland spends most games looking infuriated that he never gets decent service, then it's pointless debating.

You've obviously never played or managed football if you think a quick over the top ball to a player like Haaland is so ineffective it's not worth trying.
Actually i have, anyway, how do you play a quick ball over the top when their entire team is banked in one half ? answer that you numpty

Our football can be boring as shite . Not sure who youre watching

I don't think that would be fair to teams outside of European competition, but there should be a cap on how many games someone can play in a season.

Bigger registered squads are needed to (although not to the level of our late 90s/early 00s squads haha

I think having another transfer window would help or let clubs sign players in a one-in-one-out all season long
also the loan system could be like this

And you've clearly played at the very highest level if you think you know when a ball over the top is on more than the players we have. Are you one of those who shout "SHOOOOOOOOT" every time we are close to the penalty area?

He looks infuriated right up to the point where he scores and we win

Beauty’s in the eye of the beholder though isn’t it. Me and you might prefer different styles of play but we can both agree that it’s entertaining to see City score goals and we’ve done that more often than any other side this season.

Don’t get me wrong we’re not as fluid or exciting as some of the great teams we’ve been lucky enough to watch in recent seasons but imo we still play good football

I guess that Pep's controlled football isn't for some. Just imagine if our football - despite a depleted squad lately - wins the league, or a cup or 2 - it'd be terrible for football, wouldn't it? We're 2nd in the league and virtually in a cup final already, with power to add. You can't go playing blitzkrieg attacking football if you have no reliable defence.

Maybe you should sign up to the Michael Carrick revolution with the odd-mob down the road. They've won 2 games on the trot you know - maybe, soon, they'll be like us and have unparalleled success over a decade.

We haven't controlled possesion as enough.

As it happened, the last game to finish was Benfica v Real Madrid, so for 2-3 minutes it was completely out of our hands, which was risky and unnecessary.

A 3rd goal would have seen us leapfrog Sporting, but all those panicking around me, seemed more focused on what was happening in Naples, Paris, Frankfurt and Lisbon

God knows what the players had been told, but if anything Galatasaray looked more like scoring towards the end.

Wouldn't have been an issue if hadn't dropped points as we did.

I still think scrapping the old transfer system was daft where we could sign people in March.

They could of just made it better, I agree we should have a 2 week window for emergency ssignings

Are you Pride in Battle's missus or something? Leaping to the defence of a buffoon. Lol

And someone on the bench telling Pep what we needed ! I find it incredible we had no one just checking the scores to relay to Pep in case we needed to score again ?
Maybe we did ?
In a post-match interview, Bernie said that he was regularly checking results elsewhere with Kolo and Lijnders and asking "Do we need to score another goal". It seems very strange that he was being told the current situation (2-0) was OK when Sporting & RM was not yet decided. Very strange
