Nope. VAR cannot start a review, they can only recommend a review. In football 'recommend' is advice, 'initiate' is a command. A bit pedantic I know - but it matters within the laws of the game. Only a referee can initiate a review.

I think he felt that was a complex and tricky situation and so gave the goal to then go the monitor to have more time and replays for a clear decision. We don't know what he would have done without VAR but he did see both fouls and shouldn't need VAR to come to the obvious decision that we have now, and is correct.
We have rules. Guehi can't play the final for the rule in place,
and Szobo had to walk and will be suspended. Next dipper opponents will also insist on that rule in place and him being suspended.

Absolutely agree, I think the fact that neither player was actually involved in the process of the ball going into the net makes it a total farce. Just give the goal and get on with it. What if they'd had the same tussle off the ball 30 yards away?How can it be DOGSO when neither Haaland or Szobozlai touched the ball? I agree - I think referees have only stuck with their on-field decision on a couple of occasions. I still think there must be a certain pressure that enforces your belief that 'you got it wrong' when asked to go to the screen though. Ref's are only human after all...allegedly.I get it semantically but a ref isn’t going to turn down VARs advice to at least go to the screen, unless he’s a complete idiot (I disagree with their use of the term initiate and think it’s an unnecessary addition purely to try and keep the sentiment that the ref always has ultimate say over everything, which I don’t think is needed in this context)

They're still trying to compare it to Guehi's tug on Salah but he let go pretty much immediately, it would have been the softest penalty ever (had it been in the box), but when is it a foul and when is it not a foul?
The stupid thing is we're seeing shirts pulled 50 times a match now, certainly plenty today, so you're either going to have to start giving all of them or none of them. I'd just like to see it made a straight yellow for ANY shirt pull and obviously still a red in circumstances like today.
