Nope. VAR cannot start a review, they can only recommend a review. In football 'recommend' is advice, 'initiate' is a command. A bit pedantic I know - but it matters within the laws of the game. Only a referee can initiate a review.

I get it semantically but a ref isn’t going to turn down VARs advice to at least go to the screen, unless he’s a complete idiot (I disagree with their use of the term initiate and think it’s an unnecessary addition purely to try and keep the sentiment that the ref always has ultimate say over everything, which I don’t think is needed in this context)

Generally I agree,
but Pawson just pointed to the centre circle with a quite shy gesture.

I think he felt that was a complex and tricky situation and so gave the goal to then go the monitor to have more time and replays for a clear decision. We don't know what he would have done without VAR but he did see both fouls and shouldn't need VAR to come to the obvious decision that we have now, and is correct.

We have rules. Guehi can't play the final for the rule in place,
and Szobo had to walk and will be suspended. Next dipper opponents will also insist on that rule in place and him being suspended.
It's not all about us.
Not sure where I gave that impression? You're absolutely speculating what Pawson was thinking - as am I.

Haaland fouls, goal can't be awarded. Why go back to the advantage though, they usually do that when there is no advantage gained.
But Haaland was just trying to fend off Szoboszlai, who had continued to try to stop him getting to the ball even after the initial tug on his shirt.

They're still trying to compare it to Guehi's tug on Salah but he let go pretty much immediately, it would have been the softest penalty ever (had it been in the box), but when is it a foul and when is it not a foul?

The stupid thing is we're seeing shirts pulled 50 times a match now, certainly plenty today, so you're either going to have to start giving all of them or none of them. I'd just like to see it made a straight yellow for ANY shirt pull and obviously still a red in circumstances like today.

But He's given a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity when the ball's ended up in the net. You couldn't make it up.

John Bishop, Brookside, Fred's weather map, the voice of Thomas The Tank narration, Merseybeats, Stephen Graham, Ricky Tomlinson, W.E. Gladstone, 2 birds on top of a building, sculpture men in the sands, Dr Dre, Daniel Craig... you guys took one hell of a beating.
Dre is a dipper fan?
Fuck him and his shit beats.

Thanks again Szobo for your short nap to have Bernardo onside.

Thanks also to Alisson to slide into Nunes when the ball went out of play.

Too kind :)

Team performance today and a deserved victory at Anfield.

Lot of positives but to come from a goal behind was the real take away from today. We kept going and got the win.

Roll on Wednesday …
Positives:
We came from behind and won
We won at Anfield
Dias is back
Guehi looking super composed and in control
Rayan Ait Nouri giving us more depth and showing his ability to create in the final 3rd.
O’Reilly getting mins in midfield making him a great Utility player for us.
Haaland despite the criticism showing that he is so happy at the club.
Pep tactically getting this game managed brilliantly.
The bench is looking much stronger now. We have options.
As fans we are a lot happier going into the new week and the belief is back on.
Arsenal fans and Arteta probably feeling a little more apprehensive, as not quite shaken us off yet.
The players will be buzzing and hopefully that carries over to performances until the end of the season now.

How can it be DOGSO when neither Haaland or Szobozlai touched the ball? Cherki hit it and it went in it had fuck all to do with Haaland and Szobozlai having a tussle.

Bollocks decision.
Absolutely agree, I think the fact that neither player was actually involved in the process of the ball going into the net makes it a total farce. Just give the goal and get on with it. What if they'd had the same tussle off the ball 30 yards away?

Can anyone make sense of that third goal being chalked off? Denying a goalscoring opportunity? We fucken scored? It smacks of these ref nerd wankers wanting to make the game about themselves rather than using the rules for the greater good, it's embarrassing from them once again.

I agree - I think referees have only stuck with their on-field decision on a couple of occasions. I still think there must be a certain pressure that enforces your belief that 'you got it wrong' when asked to go to the screen though. Ref's are only human after all...allegedly.

You really don't want to understand, eh?
Can I ask if your bet was 1-3??

Ref played advantage after Szobo pulled Erl (when the ref couldn't know that Erl makes a foul next),
then Erl pulls Szobo and by that prevents Szobo to clear the ball off the line which is obviously a foul and thus an incorrect goal.

What in hell is there not to understand?

Oh absolutely. The terminology they use around initiate though, to me the initiating a review is VAR reviewing it and telling them they should watch it again. In the context they use it in the laws, saying only the referee can initiate a review is them having the power of refusing to even go to the screen to look at it. I’ve never heard of that happening at all, nor would I ever think it would.

The trouble is any referee knows that if he deviates away from the rules of football, even if its only in a small way, he'll have the over zealous governing body on his back, and could find himself either demoted, sacked, or be sent to the gallows at dawn!
