Newcastle United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

If the media now make a big issue about Dias push especially on referee watch then honestly what we doing what the commentators presenters doing!? If it comes up anywhere it should be counteracted with on corners a dead ball situation it’s the same anyone can pull push drag a player down in the box! The other week there was actually 2 players arms around Haaland both dragged him down! And the line from var was until the ball is in the air or kicked it’s not a foul!

These things always annoy me with the media making it all the time, that we got away with something! You know some Arsenal fans will go on about it oblivious to there grabbing pushing pulling down players from there corners!

just seeing media guess another rule change incoming .....not off side if pushed into off side position ....... yes he took chance maybe wont do again .... but how come rule changes only happen after city games
They should address corner routines that have become quite farcical. When Arsenal push and block it's 'clever', and now these tactics are being copied.

As fans we have to realise we ain’t that treble winning team anymore and the premier football has changed and PGMOL to both have decided to let “contact” in games go, let players drag players down from corners! You watch how Newcastle played last night for me it was a throw back to the 80/90/00’s with every set piece Newcastle had they put all there players in our box and went for % football! We also for some reason kept hoofing it from Donno for me that’s fair enough but if that is the instructions you have to win at least 70% of those long balls or you will be under a lot of pressure! Newcastle made it like a cup game they never stopped pressing running!

We have 6 away games left yeah we better than early season but our away record is W6 D3 L4 so now coming into the must win games wonder how many we will win or points we pick up out of 18 points?
It's the 2nd balls you have to win if you are going long q,too many times we are on our heels reacting rather than anticipating.but we really aren't built for it

The dippers under klopp did it on every set piece usually when attacking they would block or push a defender from getting out so to leave there late running attackers onside not once was it flagged up!!

Newcastle can be a very tough opponent: well drilled, quick, aggressive, physically very strong and plenty of technique. They gave a good account of themselves but City held firm and defended well when they had to. City wasted some golden opportunities to put the game to bed and should have won by more but a tough test passed.

We just don't look fit enough at times, and teams are worryingly putting us on the backfoot in the second half of games .... we got away with it tonight, against a Newcastle side who looked lively in the 2nd half (despite their midweek european outing), even if they didn't actually create much ....... but three points is three points, and that's all that really matters.
It’s such a strange thing watching a team that is a long way off what we were a couple of years ago, but still being very much in a title race.

I think we are all now realising what a freakishly good team we watched for 7-8 years.

You’d imagine this 2nd half drop off would eventually catch us out, but here we are still in all comps!

Weird season

Just watched the game back. Newcastle proper went for it and I’d argue that’s the best they’ve ever played at the Etihad (don’t think they’ve ever actually won here).

We didn’t half mess up some great opportunities to put the game to bed and our football was scruffy and not very in-sync at times. We made things very difficult for ourselves late on by not keeping possession high up the pitch well enough and either not trusting ourselves to pin Newcastle back by just keeping the ball and going back to Donnarumma who just punted balls up that Newcastle won back or by trying silly high-difficulty passes that weren’t on and giving Newcastle the ball back, and there were situations right at the death where we just needed to get the ball in the corner but tried to go for goal and lost the ball… but the effort we put into that game was superb.

Haaland was everywhere, up front, centre back, right wing. Rodri and BSilva were also all over the pitch. I thought Rodri played well when watching live but I don’t think I’d noticed just how well he really played until watching it back, he had a top game.

Nunes also played very well. Khusanov when he came on was a monster. Cherki’s first time passing and positive creative play created some great attacking opportunities.

O’Reilly’s goals were superb and he very nearly got a hattrick. He was excellent in the first half, he was a real threat and hard to get the ball off. He’s starting to use his size and strength really well. But he was a lot less involved in the second half.

Guehi was solid again. Showed a bit of lack of pace a few times but his defensive capabilities to make up for it were very good.

Donnarumma’s kicking was a bit poor and the ball over the top was on for the front three numerous times but his execution was mostly poor (Haaland had a bit of a go at him after one of them). I’d love for him to work on that.

There were some great moves by Marmoush and Semenyo but also some very erratic stuff from them both.

But overall, that was a game played with great resilience from the whole team.

I feel like we created more in the second half than we did in the first! We certainly outran them (I was convinced of this, so checked the data). They created fuck all really, especially from open play. We managed the game. Just impressed with both offensive and defensive parts of our game.

No, Newcastle team ran 0.5km more than us, we 113.51km Newcastle 114.05km

Yes, the result is the major outcome and was needed

It’s hard to fathom how a keeper of his ability struggles to reach the half way line with a long kick.

After his first half booking the most notable was the shirt pull and trip near the touch line , centre back pulling shirts and tackling from behind normally leads to a yellow , think the ref was lenient. The in the last ten minutes a cross came in and Burns left Haaland poleaxed and in a heap in the box , he charged into back of Haaland.
Burns was lucky to get away with just one yellow card.
He should have gone for that but Bernie jumped into him in a similar fashion so should have gone as well. I thought overall the ref had a decent game

Whatever we thought of that 2nd half I think we need to see it from the team/squad/coaches side too. After our result at Anfield and Arsenal result midweek, the team really needed to get a win last night to show to themselves that they are not going to lose any momentum but build on it and feel stronger as a unit going into next games. Its a consequence that it increases the pressure on Arsenal too, but its the focus on themselves that's more important. You could see at final whistle how much result meant to them. Sure the coaches over the week will want to fine tune some aspects of play but they will also know that these types of games bring with them some benefits for the run in that can be far more valuable than a clean sheet easy win can bring.
