Newcastle United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

He should have gone for that but Bernie jumped into him in a similar fashion so should have gone as well. I thought overall the ref had a decent game

Watch it back, you'll see significant differences. Bernie jumped into Burn's chest. Burn jumped into Erling's back, and as a I say dug his elbow into it, from what I can see.
And look at the way Burn goes down. It's a masterpiece of hammy acting. He seems to actually think about it — you can see the cogs turning, slowly — then stagger back as he says to himself “Yes, I'm having that.”
Anyway, what's done is done. My beef is more for the whole season, really. People have been getting away with roughing up Erling all season long, especially in the box. For some reason, the refs are letting it go. Sure, it's a contact sport. It's not NFL football, though (thank God).

Great result. Terrible second half yet again, which is the biggest take away for me. We had no real structure in the second half, so could not play out as we were in the first half. The effort was there but the implementation of the tactics wasn’t- this is why Gundo and Kova type of player is so important for us and shows we are missing that type of player. Not sure what Pep can do as his message hits in the first half but seems to be ignored or not possible to implement.

Newcastle switched and went man to man all over the pitch, which causes more duels and contests, and gives us less time and control.

Seems to be the way a lot at home - first half teams sit off and try and play a low block, then when it doesn't work they go man to man second half and cause us issues.

Really not sure why teams dont start the match playing that way. Maybe it's a bit riskier for them, I dont know.

Newcastle fans are fuming. Bernado should of been sent off. Dan burns disallowed goal should of stood or at the very least should of been a penalty etc. Hate newcastle fans

A big win that given the circumstances and the chance to put more pressure on Arsenal.

Nico superb in the 1st half and gave us the goals we needed. Aside from going all Norman Wisdom when he got near goal, Ait-Nouri was excellent. Rodri solid and more like himself, Erling worked his socks off for the cause in both boxes and a smart sub by Pep to get Khusa on and some pace in our back line that we need to counteract their main threat.

The crowd was excellent too and brought the noise and backed the team to the hilt. Though it felt nervy in the cold light of day we hugely limited their threat in the 2nd half, and Gigi had one save to make at the end which he did when needed. On to Leeds after another week off to charge the batteries for the run-in.

Over to you Goons. Just keep winning you beautiful blues and let them try n deal with the pressure. We're now playing first for the next month or so. Just keep fucking winning! I just wish Pep would get the team to sit back 10/15 metres or so because that high line could kill us. Also, Dias is a fantastic defender that is not in question, but his distribution when in their last 3rd is terrible. He really needs to work on his passing. P.S How fuckin unbelievably cool on the ball is Guehi? Keith Curle mark II.

BBC had us at more, albeit less at sprinting. I dunno, I really don't think we looked unfit last night. We matched one of the most athletic teams. Haaland was up and down, Nico in the middle looked comfortable.

I also don't think we are unfit, but the week break was a gamble with Newcastle flying after a good win in midweek.
Sometimes a break can work against you because you lose your rhythm and need to fight against getting your 2nd wind,

Great result and a hard-fought win to win the 3 points
But i will say one thing, this City setup is different by Pep and we are going long and on the break, it reminds me of Klopp at Liverpool when they would steamroll teams by half time and then hang on

Burn could have got a second yellow and BSilva could also have got a second yellow. But I thought it was fair in a game that was a good battle not to give either of those second yellows.
The ref allowed a physical game, and I enjoyed the tussle between Haaland and Burns. I thought Haaland was MOTM. O’Reilly got it for two great goals, but that was an all round performance by Haaland. As an overall match it was entertaining, VAR was invisible, and City battled hard for the win. They seem to have the bit between their teeth.

Not a chance that Bernie's card should have been given, clean tackle and ball contact, not remotely a foul, BUT, having been on an undeserved yellow he was lucky not to go after that barge-jump into Burn shortly after. Love his spirit but sometimes needs to rein it in slightly.
Just watching the disallowed goal again, Burn was trying to barge his way back from a clearly offside position and Dias resisted that, nothing in the contact you wouldn't see at any corner, so I see nowt wrong with the offside decision.

just seeing media guess another rule change incoming .....not off side if pushed into off side position ....... yes he took chance maybe wont do again .... but how come rule changes only happen after city games
I doubt it will be a "rule change". It's just part of PGMOL's free-for-all attitude to corners and free kicks. "It was a clear push, hold, shirt pull, but not enough to call a foul." But PGMOL might change their instructions to referees if they think City are taking advantage.

Burn wasn't signed for his technical ability that is for sure.

Burn was excellent yesterday. If a City player had that game against a top striker his player thread would have 20 pages of praise in it.

It was annoying for us, which is exactly what a great CB game should be. None of his fouls while on a yellow really risked him getting sent off as the game was refereed, and he kept Haaland quiet.
