Newcastle United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Burn was excellent yesterday. If a City player had that game his player thread would have 20 pages of praise in it.

If you say so, but he wouldn't win many medals for style or craft imo, but I'm sure you will find something else to demonstrate your personality ........................

Great win, not a good performance but who cares.
However there is definitely an issue with 2nd half performances.
I thought yesterday that we would coast through the game as we had a weeks rest and toon had a long trip in midweek.
But again we struggled, the question is why does is keep happening.
Lol

Second half drop off is just because our squad is made up of brand new (mostly v young) players and not fully fit veterans. Peps said he needs his old heads, Bernardo, Rodri, Dias, Haaland on the pitch as much as possible in those tough moments to stop us collapsing like Spurs. So he feels he has to keep them on for their leadership but Bernardo looked knackered early after a very end to end first half and Rodri still isn’t fully match fit and moving like he was pre injury.

So we end up with no real midfield, not able to hold onto the ball.

The only solution is for the new players to get more familiar with the system so they know how to react to the opposition changing things up and get through tough games like this so Pep trusts them more and he can use the bench for fresh legs.

I assume Nico G is not fully fit yet because he clearly earns Peps trust in the last year and it seemed an obvious sub to bring him on for either Rodri or Bernardo in the second half.

I don’t think the problem will fully resolve itself until next season. It had been getting better and better until today though.

Bernardo has averaged 50 games a season since arriving so I'm not surprised he's knackered

Did you watch the game

i did, then again twice on motd for what thats worth.

i remember thinking he could have been booked a few times but can't remember specifics other than the one at the side of the pitch. there were a few that were as much haaland as him.

so i thought could, not should.

as for Bernado, i thought he should have finished on a yellow but not for the incident he was booked for.

I know TV generally want anyone to score against us. But last night felt they really wanted scouse **** Gordon to score. For some reason felt they were willing him on, maybe due to where he's from!

I was impressed by the game, by both teams. City had a great first half, but Newcastle did plenty in that half too. City dropped deeper in the 2nd but I think newcastle actually created less, but with more aggression.

Donnarumma, Haaland and Rodri all stood up to create a superb spine, with Khusanov strengthening it in the 2nd half. This game was won with the spine.

Semenyo and Marmoush were both hot and cold, both had good chances to score and they both move us up the pitch very quickly and directly, but I think both were guilty of playing with their heads down a bit, charging with more care on the ball needed. Ait nouri and nunes decent, Bernie was good, as was Guehi.

Tough game, well done Blues.

We should adopt what Rosenior and Chelsea did , leave three players on the half way line and they have to leave three back , less congestion in the six yard box , give Big Don chance to claim crosses and just leave our big guys Haaland , Dias , Guehi , O'Reilly and a couple more to defend corners. They only score from corners because of the congestion and chaos they cause and force own goals and mistakes , they really are a shite football team.
Leave the midgets like Bernardo , Doku and Foden on the half way line
I can only remember one good tactic that Mark Hughes had when our Manager.

We played Stoke who are/were also a fucking big team and on corners for them we had 2 players on the halfway line on both touchlines.....didn't think he had the nous to do that, certainly never did anything as inventive afterwards.

Back to your point, Cherki would be more of a 'defender' stood on the centre spot.

Burn was excellent yesterday. If a City player had that game against a top striker his player thread would have 20 pages of praise in it.

It was annoying for us, which is exactly what a great CB game should be. None of his fouls while on a yellow really risked him getting sent off as the game was refereed, and he kept Haaland quiet.

If he played for ge would have been sent of in the first half.
Nasty dirty thug of a player.

Kid has to start with Guehi at this moment our best fit centre backs, one has brains and the other pace and no fear of who he plays against, something IMHO some of our team lacks.

Newcastle switched and went man to man all over the pitch, which causes more duels and contests, and gives us less time and control.

Seems to be the way a lot at home - first half teams sit off and try and play a low block, then when it doesn't work they go man to man second half and cause us issues.

Really not sure why teams dont start the match playing that way. Maybe it's a bit riskier for them, I dont know.
If anyone thinks City had a poor second half, watch it again but focus on the Newcastle man to man effort.
It was risky and almost worked, stopped any cohesive build up especially playing out from the back.
It was a brilliant battling performance from City to win in the end, to me it was reminiscent of the City of 2-3 years ago getting the result come what may.

Newcastle fans are fuming. Bernado should of been sent off. Dan burns disallowed goal should of stood or at the very least should of been a penalty etc. Hate newcastle fans
Talking to a couple of Geordies in the pub before the game. We'd only been chatting for 3 to 4 mins before one of them started going on about 'empty seats'. Just what is it with this obsession they have ? They're a weird lot.
