Denton and Gorton by-election - Green Party wins

I wonder if Burnham would actually have won if he was selected?
I think he would have, yeah. I think what's ultimately swung it is a combination of the majority of people wanting someone actually from Manchester or at the very least involved in local politics, someone who's lived in the constituency before as opposed to just "delivering pizzas" there(lol), and someone who hasn't gutted the place through austerity over the last 15-16 years. Burnham ticks two of these boxes.

I wonder if Burnham would actually have won if he was selected?
An interesting counterfactual. Given that he would have been standing as almost an heir apparent, I think he might have won, but it would have been nip and tuck. Could have been the first prime minister to represent part of Manchester since Balfour.

Just so everyone knows where we get our "transfer news" from - the "evil Moslem cabal stole the vote" conspiracy has started. Like clockwork.

I always look forward to the day after transfer deadline day, when I can unfollow him yet again

Anyway, excellent news to wake up to this morning. Anything that pushes us away from Farage's cunts is always a positive

They are the most radical party in the country. I’ve also said I’ve no time for Restore?
The Greens are radical but doesn't their election prove that people want something radical? Politics is not working for people, nothing is working and the same-old isn't working either. People haven't become more radical, they're just being given something to vote for and something that provably could actually win.

The most obvious thing to come out of this is just how screwed Labour are in their current guise. This type of seat is their bread and butter.

With recent events I just cannot see how Starmer can last another week and his critical mistake again was putting himself above party by refusing to allow Burnham to stand.

The asylum seekers (call them what they are.) have no recourse except to cross illegally as there is no legal path to crossing. France have offered to have processing on their side of the channel, we've said no.

As for Ad hominem, you and those who share your despicable views have spent this thread, and the green thread calling Greens crackpots and radicals, and nutters, so I will call you what I want. You and people like you are without soul, I'm alright jack and it makes my skin crawl I share a city with you and support the same team as you. There's no point in civilty because the shit you and others like you type makes me feel physically ill.
Because the Greens are crackpots, they’d be the most radical government in history if they got in. I haven’t abused or insulted people on this forum for backing them, we just disagree and you need to chill out. I don’t care if people insult other parties I may choose to vote for, but unless you’re Polanski, I haven’t insulted you.

I can’t believe you think the way you do either, I can’t believe anyone would support a party that aligns itself to global Islamist politics, as the Greens have done, and use Gaza as a point scoring position against Starmer, who despite his faults, isn’t at fault for that and at least recognises Palestine. But I think you’re just misinformed and have your loyalties in the wrong places. I don’t think you’re an evil person. The problem with the left is that how you see those who disagree with you.

Regarding the point in question, they choose to leave France due to what they receive over here, the people smugglers literally advertise what is handed out to them. It’s worth the risk to leave France for what our state gives them. Offering more when it’s already a farce isn’t going to improve the situation.

The likes of Reform may complain about sectarian voting but then why are they bothered? Were they expecting Muslims and minorities to vote for a party which plans to treat them like second class citizens or deport them?

A more interesting point of this election is the turnout, 47.8%. Apathy is still the winning party.
Yeah it’s a proper left right ding dong coming, that’s for sure

Btw, the policies where regards Asylum Seekers are treated here (Living in converted hotel rooms, sometimes four to a room, not allowed to cook their own food, given a pittance to live on, given the same food every day with little variety, waiting internminably on a decision on their future, eventually moved into a shithole HMO that a landlord profits off and an external organisation also profits off to maintain, or a dilapidated family home, that constantly leaks and has breakdowns heating in the coldest months that aren't sorted for weeks or months sometimes, whilst being castigated and blamed for all ills in the country) isn't the wonderful life you and people like you make it out to be, given I've worked in the sector. The draw for people to come here is often via connections with family, communities and the fact they speak English better than French or German or Swedish or whatever other place they could of stopped in (And many many more do than here. And are usually treated considerably better.)

So, Labour or the Tories policies on Asylum are immaterial, we're signed up to the UN Convention on Refugees, to remove ourselves from that might be as damaging on a world stage as the ongoing catastrophe that Brexit is.

But you don't give a fuck about any of this, you see a brown bloke getting a shit smartphone and staying in what used to be a 5 star hotel and think he's living the life of riley.

So being patriotic and proud of many of our fine cultural and political heritage makes one right wing? Ok then.

No, the implication that you would be castigated for liking Opera, Shakespeare, Pubs or Industrialism would mean you're racist under a left wing government, such is your implication, but you can be a pedant if you want.

After the snide underhand tactics they've employed this week Labour should be wriggling. Just blatant lies to try and steal Green votes because they'd rather lose to Reform.

It's madness too because Labour have steadied the ship after years of Tory unease but are struggling under the pressure of the rise of the right and the media's obsession with it. Instead of fighting it, they're giving in and becoming a bit Tory-lite.

At least the Greens have had the bollocks to fight Reform head on. Glad that lot have been shown the door in Manchester.

You misrepresent their policy, then call them crackpots, so you're not in good faith, so there's literally no point trying to refute anything you say because it's not based in reality.

And there it is. Global islamist politics. Genocide happening in Gaza comes directly back to us (And America). - Starmer is actively supporting an actual fascist government in Israel with weapons and recon, so he's fair game where regards 'point scoring' or as it's otherwise known, the truth!

I see your views as evil, and you are responsible for your views, so you are again, souless, selfish and myopic.

I've answered why they leave above, from a view of someone who's worked in the sector. You're completely wrong.

P.S. - We're owned by Global Islamists. That must stick in your craw a bit, as it's not palatable to you.

Very good points about the English language. A fact wilfully ignored by the right

Don’t know what that means mate? I think it won’t work if that’s what you mean?

It was a joke suggesting that your statement that Labour had moved left could only have been made with the assistance of narcotics :-) I could have just said that almost all political analysts consider the Overton window to have moved right and that both of the traditional parties have shifted in line with that. But that seemed a bit dry so I went for a bit of levity which obviously didn't land so apologies for that.

Yesterdays result suggests that plenty of people think Labour aren't 'left' enough for them, if that's the case then it either means Labour have moved rightwards or those people have moved leftwards. I actually think it's mostly the former. Whether it was simply a two pronged protest vote remains to be seen, but I suspect it's the start of a much bigger problem for Labour than even they had before yesterday.

As for the Greens drug policy, well their next step in multiple areas is to see if they can frame what are mostly still quite broad brush positions into coherent policy that convinces people to give them a try. I guess we'll only see how capable they are of doing that as we move towards the next election.
