Breaking fast during football

There was a moment where I thought engineering a break during the game for this to happen was a bit over the top. At that point I thought, "if a player can't play because they aren't well enough, or don't have enough energy, then they shouldn't be picked".

Then I remembered that the match was moved from a 3pm kick off to Saturday evening for TV purposes, so fuck them.

I can't be arsed arguing about the politics of it, I have my views and I won't change anyone's minds, but I did find some Leeds fans saying the break killed the momentum of the game and that's why they lost hilarious. I know they're a deluded fan base, but I didn't think they were that deluded.

I think fans are just fed up with all the stoppages in football full stop which have been abused by clubs like Arsenal. But I don’t have a problem with player welfare issues as happened on Saturday. In fact I do think it helped us by disrupting the early momentum of Leeds!

Booing from both sets of fans, are they taking the piss? Personally I don't have an issue with it, VAR checks, Arsenal's tactical time outs with a keeper injury take longer.

Leeds fan on Talk Sport this morning trying to justify that the booing was because the City Team (who did actually have 3 Muslims) took advantage to all come to the bench for a Pep talk. Just remind me where we’re all the Leeds team during this time (with no Muslims)?

They can ask for water, why designate it?
Although some time ago in 1991 Michael Jones refused to play on a Sunday.during a RWC world.
Anyone remember Avi Cohen at liverpool.
I remember him getting very bad press for playing a match against Southampton, possibly during Yom Kippur.

The Premier League could clear this up once and for all by making it compulsory for all matches played during Ramadam to give a break to help them break their fast, or simply make it impossible for the TV companies to schedule matches where this could happen. There was no particular reason why Leeds v City had to be an evening kick off on Saturday, there were other games over the weekend that could have made the evening kick off slot. TV has too much power and the EPL are too scared to make sensible choices.

Yup, agree. The moans from the Leeds fans do my head in. Given what we've put up with when facing time wasting teams (including themselves) for 15 years and more, they've got no reason to claim they were hard done to last Saturday.

FIve years ago I replied to a post by 'eds' on the same thing, immediately after a game at home to Burnley (see below)

And nowt has changed.. in fact it's probably worsened with the recent advent of The Tarquins' impression of the 'Black Hole of Calcutta' each and every time they have a corner kick or an attacking free kick, together with their taking 'timeouts' every 20mins when one of their players feigns injury. Btw, how naive was I then thinking 'a few bookings might sort it out'?!

≈===================================

"Ederson's been booked a couple of times in recent years for just one instance of time-wasting at a goalkick (definitely one was at home to Southampton a couple of years ago) after we endured the opposing goalkeepers doing the same on an industrial scale from the moment the games began, always without any sanction.

Yesterday, Pope was up to the same trick. I randomly looked at the screen at our end twice to see how long Pope took to get the ball back in play from the moment of going out of play. One occasion was 49 seconds, the other was 57 seconds (and both were when Burnley were 1-0 down.. speaks volumes about their gameplan and intentions..)

When a team is under the cosh from us like Burnley was yesterday (as with so many other teams over the past decade) it usually results in them taking at least a dozen or more goalkicks. At the best part of a minute each to return the ball into play, that's at least 12mins of the available game time.

Never see officials compensating for this negative tactic when 'Additional Time' is announced.. All it needs is a few cards being dished out to sort it..."

It’s been happening since 2021. Why’s it suddenly an issue now?

Has it always been announced on a big screen, and then subsequently shown as a highlight on Motd?

That's not loaded in any way just fyi, nor am I making any point with it. I genuinely never noticed it before and didn't know.

From my vantage point in the away end, it sounded like it was only coming from the Leeds end but I've no way of knowing that zero City fans booed. Would be a strange thing for one of our OSCs to claim if it didn't happen

It is not true that City fans booed. Just fake news. Some Blues were a bit confused at first. It looked like a substiution was happening. But they did not boo.

Leeds fans and their bigoted booing....well I never...

Is it too much to ask for a bit of respect and humanity. In Leeds it clearly is.

Zero tolerance to bigotry in my view.

If someone says they like the thought of abducting children, we shouldn't be like "Fair play, that's your view but I accept it - now let me buy you a drink".

Bigotry (and racism) needs to go back into decline and we need to listen to the lessons of the past.

It's not bigotry to talk and have a discussion about things that are happening in the country.

That's the problem in society now. Way too partisan and not enough discussion.

I agree that racism shouldn't be tolerated but that poster wasn't really being bigoted per se.

Talking about politics and the shifts happening in a country isn't bigotry, no matter what your viewpoint. That's what many people need to understand and maybe progress will be made rather than shutting anyone down who doesn't agree with everything you do.

But we are really getting too deep into it. Some players are Muslim and it'd be in their best health interests to take that short break. That's about it. I don't really see a problem and it's probably not worth the big rant that poster went on... but I don't see why he should be banned either.

I don’t think the break warrants the backlash.
It’s not like they stopped for a full meal, it wasn’t a long stoppage, VAR checks regularly take longer.

I’m not religious and I have very little time for religion but ffs it’s their faith. I wouldn’t want to play a competitive game on an empty stomach.

I wasn't there Saturday but I very much doubt any City fan was booing. Leeds have a very bad reputation for racism and bigotry and they certainly lived down to that reputation.

I stand with our Muslim City supporters. Respect and solidarity costs nothing.

It was quite frankly the most bigoted post I’ve ever seen on this forum. It played on racial stereotypes and pigeon holed an entire 2billion people based on the actions of a few.

It was an absolutely horrific post.

Could have just started the match a half hour earlier.
