What has caused the current volatility in the world

If you're an avid supporter of the far right or the far left you're the problem and will continue to be the problem. Binary choices are not choices they are decisions and the loud minority from both sides need to be ostracised by the majority.

How has the left got us into the situation we find ourselves in?

Politicians are just weidos with fucked up ideas about ideal societies.

In their heads, it all makes perfect sense. In reality, all they create is a lot of misery.

It’s just wrong on a biological level today that some people can know the intricacies of a war in a country 4,000 miles away but they don't even know who their neighbours are.
I have to say — this sentence really made me think about how I spend my time. Glad you wrote it. I think you’re right.

The volatility is caused by megalomaniac narcissistic pricks who run these superpowers, people slag off people like Starmer and our own Albonese in Oz but they are decent human beings who I could never imagine starting a war.
Maybe America Russia etc could do with these types of leaders.

Well we’ve been going about 200,000-300,000 years and have certainly improved in a great deal of areas but war and killing still happens globally. I just think it’s ingrained in us. Maybe we will get beyond it, I just think it’s human nature.
Use football as an experiment and look at the way fans have acted over the century and a half of the sport…

Football was sprung on us out of nowhere but we reverted to our natural type as a species with it. Hooliganism started almost immediately, with tales of fans going around the country to fight rival hooligans from other clubs in the late 1800s (there was even an old woman arrested for hooliganism at a Preston game in the early 1900s).

We band together, act tribally under our banners and colours, and we are veciforous in our support for our side and despise our rivals. Violence was a result for many decades and still does occur; our tribes will come together and look to enact violence on our rivals.

Not just Association Football hooliganism but also take a look at the Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide football match, and rugby too, and see how naturally everyone involved acts.

Take that to different areas of life: political ideologies, religions, nations, races… it’s a natural thing for us to do as a species. Given the platform for it, we will always revert to type. We are a warring animal. We want to beat/kill our rivals and take what they’ve got. It is within us genetically.

There were once numerous species of humans dotted about Africa, Europe and Asia, yet there’s only us left. There have been Neanderthal skeletons found in Europe and Asia with fatal injuries and it’s no surprise to me that we are the only homo species left. We are a social animal and we will have banded together to outcompete and kill our competitors and see our branch of the species succeed. Since there’s oniy Sapiens left, we naturally look to do the same thing to our competitors now - which is other Sapiens.

If Islam enacted it’s core goal of taking over the entire world and forcefully converted everyone to Islam and killed everyone who refused; there would be splinter groups who go their own way, there’d be no harmony and there’d be wars amongst itself eventually.

If Communism - which has the same goal - did the same, the result would be exactly the same.

Even if the airy-fairy utopian dreamers of this world got everyone to hold hands and leave a tranquil life under their flowery delusions of peace, it wouldn’t take long for a group of people somewhere to want to disrupt that and take things for themselves and kill off those who oppose them.

At any level we are no different to ants or plants. We are here to outcompete our rivals.

Lord of the Flies

Its a continuum of shocks and events:

  • Cold War conflicts and Middle East instability
  • 1970s economic upheaval reshapes Western capitalism
  • 1980s market reforms and globalisation accelerate
  • Rise of militant jihadism (1980s–1990s)
  • 1990s–2000s expansion of globalisation and Western influence
  • 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union removes the Cold War structure
  • September 11 attacks and the War on Terror
  • Iraq War undermines trust in Western leadership
  • 2008 financial crisis damages faith in globalisation
  • Arab Spring and migration crises reshape European politics
  • Rise of nationalist and populist movements in Western democracies and increase in geopolitical rivalry

And those were a continuum of shocks and event triggered by shocks and events from the 50 years before that and the 50 years before that and the....

The (latest) crisis of capitalism and the ease with which plutocratic criminals manipulate the minds and emotions of the gullible majority as they seek to divert us. They know that people will rally around rags on sticks and forget who their real enemies are.

I posted earlier in the thread that politicians and their donors were the biggest culprits.

I think that what is occurring now is that varied news sources are revealing that much of what we were been told over the years is false, either direct lies or misinformation by omission. Young people are now not accepting of our traditional geopolitics and do not trust the information that kept my generation 'in line' . I use Winston Churchill as the best example - I was told that he was the greatest hero of all, but I then discovered that he is widely held responsible for the death of 3 million people in Bengal, something that was never, ever touched upon in my youth.

Not the whole reason but a big part of it is social media, its algorithms and X being bought by Elon Musk who uses it to influence politics.
