Referees' Performances | 2025/26

Soft but in CL those are given all day, every day

He's been legged. Had that been Vinicius VAR would have bellowed in the ref's ear "Go and look on the fuckin' pitchside monitor!" And with furrowed brow Dick Turpin would have pointed to the spot and welded on a DGSO so a red into the bargain.

If this French twat ever refs us again...
I said to my neighbour that at least we wouldn't be having a Spanish ref cheating us. Instead, Uefa, still smarting from the CAS deliberations, send a French one with sealed envelope outlining how they would like the game reffing. We would probably have fared better had Señor Lahoz been jogging up 'n down the pitch.

Very clearly doesn't get the ball and very clearly does contact Cherki's foot. Not clear and obvious for var though apparently.

Looked a painful one, he stomps down on the joint of foot and leg, he would have had no complaints if the ref or var had done their jobs.

Compare and contrast to the arsenal dive last week against Leverkusen (Eze?) where there was no clear contact yet var instructed to review. It's hard not to suggest it's being used when convenient, rather than to give the correct outcomes.

Even if the decision for the pen is within the rules, it shows the rules requiring a red card punishment in such situations are not reasonable. The referee destroyed the whole tie by sending Bernie off. Why is the penalty not enough?

I've posted on BM last week that if that was a definite penalty for Arse that I'm Silky Ilkays missus. And sadly I'm not.

Cheating and corruption at play in plain sight.

Why are Arse beloved by UEFA? Is it their cartel credentials because they certainly don't appear regularly in the competition. How many entries to CL in last decade, probably 4 at most?

That's the dilemma !
City have seldom had a player who is ready to cheat and dive, since Franny.
Personally, I'm glad that Pep has instilled into his players.
Compare that to "Mikky the Robot's" team, whose players would probably be dropped if they didn't theatrically try to get penalties.
Hope that Sunday's referee doesn't fall for the Arse's tricks and trips...

I haven’t seen the Arsenal one as I’m not interested. The foul on Cherki last night could have been given as a penalty but if I’m honest, if the pull on Mbappe by AIt-Nouri was the other way around, I would have been screaming for a penalty because I thought it was. This tie was lost in the first match by Guardiola’s line up and if I’m truthful to myself, I don’t think we are good enough to win the CL with this squad.

Agree with you about the squad 100%.

The Arse penno was their usual cheating and diving, salvaged an undeserved draw in about the 87th minute.

I'm no conspiracy theorist but that was the most inconsistent officiating I've ever seen in a City game (in Madrid's favour).

I dunno, a yellow and a penalty (20% chance of missing) for stopping a ball 100% going in would make it a no brainer to always handle it.

There was another one around the same time where the player lead with his elbow & the ball hit it……not the same as Bernado’s, but not sure there was enough of a difference for one to be a penalty & the other not

Hasn't Wenger gone up in the world?

Handball situations may be quite different. Bernardo is with both hands behind his back *and* it is not certain the ball goes in. That's very different from making a save like a goalie.

I get that complicating the rules to take into account such differences has its downsides, but the red card last night seemed to me a bit excessive. The handball rules leave room for very different interpretations.

I don't think this squad is good enough either. However, that is no reason to be on the arse end of practically every call by the officials.
