The Labour Government

Bills are going up and up. Energy prices going up and up. Fuel going through the roof. Life is expensive.

Of course there are folk far worse off than me and I have no objection to helping out the poor.

My entire point is there is absolutely no consideration whatsoever for the squeezed middle. We pay in more and more and more and get absolutely fuck all out.

I'll be amazed if I even see a penny of the state pension by the time I come to "retire". Not that I can even see myself being afford to retire.
I dont disagree with you entirely but anyone working is getting hit, the richer you are the less you feel it. Anyhow this popped up on my Instagram(i dont do LBC) and this is the quality of our ministers in the time of a fuel crisis. 5p cut decision already taken.

Between Nick Ferrari and that clueless droid from the government, my support would be for an Iranian drone landing in the studio.

I'm amazed Murray has lasted this long. Completely inept.

Yep. The normal process when hiring a tradesman is get 3 quotes and go for the middle one. With doctors all of us would go for the best!

My niece is 'graduating' as a doctor soon so I do have a vested interest in making sure sure all her hard work (and she has worked her socks off) pays off. I just hope she is mentally tough enough. Can you imagine what a 'bad day' for a nurse or doctor is?
The normal procedure with a tradesman is to get the one that may turn up in the current calender year :-)

I get your ire and the need to target it. We are in volatile times which, for the world, are a constant and rarely affect us majorly. On this occasion we are being affected.

Our reliance on oil is now being brought into focus and particularly how it affects not just fuel prices but the greater economy.

We live in an open market and therefore are subject to price changes as supply and demand dictates. The likes of Reform and the Tories argue for a "smaller state" and then argue that the state should intervene when price shocks occur. Well they can't have it both ways.

If you are an employee, you have experienced no changes to your tax or NI that were not already in place by the Tories. That changes next week when the Labour extension of the tax threshold kicks in. The "squeezed middle" will always be the source of the most pain as, fortunately, there are many more of them than the very poorest. Many of that group do get plenty out be it education, health, child support, police etc, as do you get plenty out but are lucky enough not to need to use those services.

I have previously put forward suggestions for how the SP could be reformed but it takes some political bravery and a view beyond a 5 year term. I think it will continue for those already "in the system" but will inevitably require major reform. But look at the furore when there was a hint that pensioners would lose £200 a year.

Which would be fine if the police and health services were fit for purpose, but they’re falling apart at the seams as well.

Neighbourhood policing is non-existent, as is the investigation of what they like to call “petty crime”. It’s not petty if you’re a victim of it.

The NHS has been fucked since covid.

Where does our money go?

There is no easy solution to any of this but we need a long term plan to get our economy back on track.

Going back into the EU would be the top of my list but this government lacks any kind of backbone to do anything that ‘brave’ so we’ve got more stagnation and hand wringing, meanwhile our economy swirls further down the toilet.

Our politics has been poisoned with mud slinging and populist personality politics and culture war bullshit, at the expense of sensible policy that is best for the nation.

I can’t be alone in thinking this. It’s maddening that advocating for grown up politics just gets dismissed as being “centrist dad".

Well what’s wrong with that?

I’m really on one today - just feeling properly, properly fucked off with all these clueless knobheads in charge around the world, not a single one of them could organise a piss up in a number 10 garden party.

Anyway I need to go back to work, lucky me I actually still have a job for the moment.

You need to listen to Starmers speech this morning ........

I have. It’s a nod in the right direction and frankly one he should’ve taken 18 months ago but going nowhere near far enough.

The insane thing is, if Labour went all in and put rejoining the EU in their election manifesto (a while off but it’ll come round quick) it’d almost guarantee them a victory. The polling on it is so strong, it’s clear as day that even Brexit voters acknowledge it’s been a massive mistake.

TBH we probably couldn't afford to lose £20 million a day in tax revenue. I for one would prefer that they make the buses & trains free of charge for a period.

Costs more than 20 million quid for an open return train ticket from Manchester to Stabsville, sorry, London, these days.

Years of outsourcing public services to private companies hitting home now.

The government is hamstrung because it no longer controls utilities, transport and energy production.

Meanwhile expect the usual suspects to justify the current crisis to enrich their stakeholders further.

We don't have the infrastructure or stock to provide free public transport for a short term period because of the business models adapted to run minimum services for maximum profit of the private owners.

Why do right-wingers want government intervention? That's socialist!

They should wait for their beloved market forces to put everything to rights again. Or don't they believe in their own economic theory?

These days only voodoo economists and nutters truly believe that markets can work without strong institutional frameworks and regulation. Everyone else claiming the efficacy of free-markets is just a lying charlatan.

What the distribution across those three buckets looks like for the people you're referring to I'm not qualified to estimate.
