Chelsea (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Yes, my mistake. In 23-24 he finished on 34 games, 22 goals, 11 assists, impressive figures.

It was the following season where he had 37 games, 15 goals, 9 assists except all but 1 goal and 3 of the assists happened in gameweeks 1 to 21, in the remaining 16 games (1 missed through injury) he just fell off a cliff.
They'd be impressive figures if they were distributed evenly throughout the season. But as you said, he was mediocre in the second half of that season, along with this season. Yes; he's had injuries. But when he's played, he's been underwhelming.

so under Pep it looks like we get 17.66 pts in our last 7 games, on average. Let's call it 18.

18 pts from 21 - including a win against Arsenal - will put us on 82, with them still able to get 85. Would they get 5 from 5? dunno maybe.

whichever way you cut it, this is probably going to be very tight.
Should we beat them then other teams need to study how we did it and adopt a similar playing style.

The problem with this comparison is it doesn't really measure pressure.

17/18 and 20/21 we got 16 and 12 points because we were 10+ points ahead and the league was in the bag, and we were in other comps.

We average about 20/21 points when the pressure is on and we need to win.

Great result but I do wish referees would get hold of this wrestling Haaland on every cross. It's great that Nico is sneaking in but for that first goal, Haaland had two players physically holding him down stopping him from moving. It's every game now.
I really don't know why nobody tries something different to counter it. Put a few players on the edge of the box and tell them to run onto the cross Dave Watson style v Ipswich a thunderolt an header into the top corner. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Gabriels teeth wouldnt know what the fuck just happened.

it's fair enough to say not all run-ins are the same but then any subset you choose has disparity in things like the players, the coaching techniques, opposition faced etc etc., but Pep is the constant.

I think most people have forgotten him.
Probably the worst club he could have gone to.
They turn up for things like the CWC but missing in the bread and butter of the Premier league
I posted earlier that I cannot understand the Palmer and Fodens drop off in form this season.
Gone from battling to be an England regukar to possibly one or both not even making the World Cup panel.
Palmer is paying the price for impatience. Hasn’t learnt enough to cope with opponents responses. Should have stuck with Pep.

Yes, it was an unusual situation.
Since Pep arrivred we have probably loaned out well in excess of 100 players but refused Palmer that option.
A bit like Echeverri this season, listen to the people who know.

Reminds me of times gone by, as a boy standing on the terraces listening to the old codgers moaning about everything. Quite a lot of it makes me chuckle.
So true. I remember hearing an old chap saying to his pal “that Colin Bell is a decent player but he’s no Eric Brook” - top deck of a 53 bus at Belle Vue.

Kinel the 53 bus that brings back memories,I used to get the 92,later 192 to the top of Dickinson Road, then the 53 down to the birch villa,or if we were lucky the 53x to Maine Road

I'd go with Khusanov and Guehi. But I suspect that Dias is one of Pep's "go to" guys.
Think the last few performances with these two will force Pep to stick with this partnership for the run in unless they crumble in any games …..reckon he will most likely change it for the FA Cup semi final.

That’s what I’m hoping for anyway as the Khus / Guehi combo has looked very good recently.

I still remember walking from Stanley Grove up Dickinson Road to the match and back again, and on the dark nights looking through peoples window to try and see the other results if you weren't stood near someone with a radio and Picadilly 261 on. Back to the FOC thread for me.
