Sounds familiar. Had to take my dog to vets last summer with an ear infection. Ludicrously expensive consultation fee for what was a 5 minute job where somebody took a swob of her ear and nothing else.

Was then given the option of a more detailed and more expensive analysis and also given the option of fast tracking the testing for an additional fee. Both completely unnecessary, certainly at that stage but part of the attempted upsale as they treat pet health like they're trying to sell you extras at a fast food shop.

Was given a few days worth of pain killers for her which were about £60 and turned out to be the equivalent of paracetamol, I'm convinced she didn't need them.

Eventually got the tests back to find she had 2 infections that required different treatments. was faced with a similar price for what were commonly available ear drops, by chance I already had 1 of them at home, bought for a much cheaper price at something like pets at home, reluctantly paid for the other. They did work and her ear cleared up but got well and truly fleeced.

Was the first time at that particular vets as our local one which was always very good got shutdown but they were under the same umbrella company, haven't been back there since.
 
I got quoted £1100 by our vets to remove a sty “which could get infected and cause blindness”

Went of its own accord within 48 hours when I bathed it regularly with cotton wool/cold water

2 Golden Retreivers for us. Keep me same and drive me insane in equal measure

I am hearing more and more recommendations for unnecessary treatments.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the going rate for general anaesthesia, veterinary surgeon, and aftercare, along with precautionary medication etc. Paid about £870 to have a few greyhound teeth removed about 3-4 years ago. The issue is whether they were advising that as treatment, which clearly they should not have been?

Normally they try to sell you prescriptions about 400% the price you can get it online. Good vets you can ask for a prescription and just buy it online A LOT cheaper.

Had the same with my pointer cross, cost over £1000 to cure his ear infection each visit £60 minimum then ear drops that didn’t work, then lab(rador) test to identify nasty infection (which we could of guessed given the failure of the usual drops) then the super antibiotics which “didn’t quite” clear it so another dose required. Ultimately worked, but could have been considerably cheaper - did refuse the suggestion that they could knock him out and syringe his ears before the super antibiotics for £500, which is probably why they made me pay for the second batch (£90 a bottle plus consultation) Not convinced they have my pets best interests at heart
 
I was watching the news a few weeks ago when they ran a story about vet costs in the UK. They featured a lady who noticed a lump next to her dogs front leg. Her vet quoted her £1,500 to remove it and if I remember correctly, additional costs afterwards for pills, etc.

As she owned a motorhome and regularly travelled around Europe with her dog, she drove to Italy with him and the vet there charged her £160 for the operation and post op care.

Yes, there are two general types of antihistamines that are readily available and i know for certain that at least one of them is fine for dogs and you can get them in the £1 shops for a pack of 6. I'll check the name and post it.

Research everything online because the vets charge a bloody fortune for tablets that in many cases are just basic cheap drugs.

Our vets have gone from £45 to £75 in the past couple of years just for the basic consultation. Last couple of times I was barely in there 5 minutes. Then charged me another £90 for a few days supply of tablets that I later found out were little more than bog standard paracetamol, then wanted me to go back in a couple of weeks for another check and another £75. Dog is perfectly fine now, nothing more than a bit of a tummy upset. Absolute piss take.

What makes things worse is the fees are so high now that insurance prices have gone through the roof too, £80 a month with £300 excess. That's more than my car insurance costs and I drive a fucking Range Rover. I have savings but I dont know how people that dont have any and are on a low income are supposed to pay those prices.
 
Sorry no picture but I've just seen a crazy looking dog, a Jack Russell Dachshund cross, the head of the jack Russell and the body of the sausage dog. I bet it's a nutter.

Also, chewing paws and dry skin can be a sign of wheat intolerance. Switch to wheat free food food.

Happened to my m & f-i-l last week, their dog was prescribed 1 antihistamine tablet (on top of rip off consultation fee of £55), and were charged £17 for the 1 tablet. When m-i-L got home she checked the receipt , and the vets had inadvertently shown the cost of the tabs on her receipt, the cost to the vets was £17 for a 500 blister pack!!!!!
