Pep to leave at the end of the season

That’s fair enough, but I think the club would have approached Vinnie prior to getting in touch with Maresca.

Like I’ve also said, it may be best to keep him there for a couple more seasons and let Maresca take the heat from being Pep’s successor.
But if we lose significant ground during that couple of seasons? Miss out on CL? Not challenging for titles?

I agree we probably approached Vinny.

It may also tell us the club have liked other coaches who’ve worked under Pep and approached them to take over, but they don’t fancy it.
I wonder how many coaches ( outside of the big names) have worked with Pep or at the club with the academy and who have moved on to other clubs.
Just thinking along the lines of a person the club know well and might work alongside Pep for a year.
Brian Barry Murphy did well with the academy and gained promotion this season with Cardiff.
Des Buckingham was at Melbourne and won the league with Mumbai City. Now managing in Saudi.
CFG wanted these two to remain within the group.

True but don’t you think Khaldoon, Soriano, Viana and Pep as well will have thought that and done a lot of hard thinking and research as well as rebuilding the squad knowing this was coming? It’s becoming obvious Pep stayed last year because he wanted a smooth transition with the squad ready and in a good position,if he didn’t or doesn’t think we were in the right place yet he’d probably stay next season. He cares about his legacy and success continuing after he’s gone,as do the chairman and owners.

That’s why I think we’ve been linked to multiple wingers that have high output , Diomande , Kroupi , El Mala all high scoring attackers
I think Pep has been talking up Sav knowing full well we are trying to keep his value up before selling him in the summer, he’s just not got the cojones to succeed in the Prem.

I think anyone taking over from Pep is on a hiding to nothing.
Going to be an impossible manager to follow
In my opinion it’s not the end of the world if we have a managerial merry-go-round for a couple of years, we know that Vince will be taking over and doing a dynasty at some point soon.

As always, it’s great to be a blue.

I think I am correct in saying that Vinny in his leaving statement said " This is not goodbye it is just au revoir"

Unless the new manager is absolutely clueless we won’t. We’re building a really good young squad again

Nobody can follow Pep with the same success, we have to be careful about what happened to the rags after Ferguson left. We are better run so I doubt things will be as bad as that, but Maresca isn’t really an inspiring or charismatic choice is he.

Should have tried to get any of Enrique, Klopp, Emery or Vinny. I just don’t see Enzo Maresca being a big draw for new signings or particularly inspiring for those already here, especially after Pep.

I disagree.

Any top level coach who hasn’t got the self confidence and minerals to want this job has a lack of mentality. They are already telling you they don’t back themselves and that would manifest in their performance and the players would sense it. You cannot have someone like that in charge of something of global importance.

Isn’t lack of mentality something City go to huge lengths to weed out in any recruitment process?

If you’re a top coach and you’re full of self belief you’d be knocking on the door and begging for this job.

Would we accept a top player we’re looking to sign saying erm I’m not sure yet let me go and have a season at Fulham and I’ll see how I get on?

Would we bollocks. Because their mentality is shit.

For this role, you simply do not bring in a placeholder. You go and get the right man.

That’s a simplification of the situation, which assumes potential candidates would somehow position themselves as not wanting the job because they lack the mentality/confidence to follow Pep - which they of course never would.

The reality is that in any recruitment process, at some point the potential candidate needs to indicate they are available for or are interested in the job - and they just don’t. At that particular moment.

They commit to their current job, and let the people managing the recruitment know they’re flattered, and if the timing was right they’d of course be honoured - but they’re fully committed to their current job, and still have so much to achieve there.

For the moment.

Like signing a new contract with their current club - just like both Luis Enrique and Vinnie have recently done.

And they keep their powder dry til the placeholder is done, then let it be known at that stage that the timing is right and they’re in.

Happens all the time - both inside football, and in other fields/sectors.

I doubt we’d completely rule out either Vinnie or Enrique as future Managers just because they weren’t knocking at the door and begging for the job this summer.

Circumstances mean the timing isn’t right for either, but may well be when we’re next looking.

And if Maresca fails, and we get rid in two years - we’ll be after the best man for the job at that point, and won’t be ruling them out because they weren’t all over like a rash it a couple of years ago.

We didn’t decide Pep was never, ever going to be our Manager because he turned down City and went to Bayern back in 2013.

He was the best man for the job, and we knew it - so we got on with it in the immediate term, and hired him when he was ready.

The same applies here.

If there is any truth in this, when is it going to be announced? Is he gonna casually mention it in his press conference before villa?

The club needs to prepare for its biggest send off its ever had

The fact that we don’t know makes me think it fake rumours

I still disagree.

A proper mentality, a proper winner, a proper self confident individual bites your hand off.

Anyone hiding because they don’t back themselves enough, can fuck off.

Of course I’d expect the leading figures will have done a lot of thinking and research.

What worries me is, that after doing so, they would come up with some bizarre placeholder idea headed by a coach who’s been sacked by 2 of the clubs he’s previously worked for.

Doesn’t strike me as very 2026 City.

Major boost for Trafford he might stay now. Maresca wanted him badly from Burnley at Chelsea to be his number one keeper
