Pep to leave at the end of the season

Win v Everton and it will…sign an extension pep. Lose and it will be time for a change.

Football eh?

Let’s hope in all seriousness that pep does stay. We will need the stability after 115 and as much experience as we can to hold back the red shite.

We ain’t ready to change. Awful day when he does go, just awful.

Think Maresca is a bit of a romantics choice. 'Knows' the club, worked eith Pep (briefly), untested and not sought after by the biggest clubs, could be an unearthed gem etc etc.

This club sold Palmer. McAtee. Numerous other academy players. Sent a 100m player out on loan. Sacked Mancini. When has romance ever been key to the decision making?

I don’t think it’s romance I think the club are just taking the safe option he’s available, Kompany isn’t, he’s in his contract with Bayern, if Pep leaves. Maresca is similar style to Pep , possession based , full backs cut into midfield wingers stay wide but can cut in if needed , striker is needed in the system to help play develop.

Where as if you went for an Alonso you would have to buy two wing backs or Doku and Savinho become those wing backs , switch to a 3 at the back formation. Learn to play more on the transition.

With Enrique you’d play possession based but fullbacks go high and wide, wingers are needed to provide more goals and assists cutting inside, Enrique new formation needs a false 9 over an actual centre forward.

Maresca is more plug and play, the pieces are already here for him to play his system. It’s a World Cup year as well so having a manager that the players already here know the way the system works as it’s similar to Pep and not a complete change means there’s no learning period.

Not sure Pep L would be too happy
That's an interesting point where Pep L sits in all of this.
I see him more as a technical coach and tactician rather than someone who deals with all the general management issues so hopefully he wouldn't feel insulted and carry on doing what he's doing.
Hopefully he sees it that way too !

Surely though we will know his decision by now, I just can’t believe that won’t be the case.

You could look at it another way. The default is he's staying, and the longer he leaves it the less they need to ask him the question. If you're a member of the board and you're seeing his media appearances this week, what makes you think that he's leaving? Even if he's told you he might leave, you'd watch those and go, 'nah he's not going'.

Ultimately, succession planning has already been done because the back up plan is out of a job and isn't going to start a new one until the summer anyway. Recruitment is well in motion. Pre season has been locked down. And all that has been done with Pep's consultation.

I think the idea that Alonso has to play 343 and Enrique has to play with a false 9 is wrong.

If they came here they’d adapt to the squad we have, and the players would adapt to them.

Maybe Pep L is offered a new role at the club and maybe Maresca is coming in as Pep’s new number 2 with the view he takes over when Pep’s contract is fulfilled and Pep L comes in as the number 2 again just a thought with the rumours around and Pep saying he’s still got the contract to honour.

Yeah, I get that, I’m just trying to tally it against @Ric’s information, which I suppose is why these threads have heated up. I just don’t believe after 10 years and the relationship he has with the club that he’s not already given us a definitive answer either way. He’s too close to Khaldoon for that not to be the case.

That leads me to 2 very distinct scenarios. Firstly Ric’s source is wrong and we have nothing to worry about, Pep is staying for another year and all is well in the world, or that Pep is leaving and he’s just so utterly relaxed in the whole situation that he’s capable of “playing” with the media and using poetic license to throw them off the scent.

Not a prayer imo.

I was just passing on what I was told, but have no way of verifying if it’s “100%”.
Yeah, badly phrased by me mate, I meant you wouldn’t have posted it unless you trusted the guy telling you believed it 100%.

If he's playing with the media, he must know he's playing with the supporters too. Which I don't think he'd want to do.

In either case I don't think we have too long to wait to know definitely what's happening. If he's leaving post Villa, even if that game is a title decider, the club will announce it before the match IMO.

All fair comment, which just shows the guesswork going on, and yeah I said yesterday we’ve got no more than 3 weeks to wait so it’s not going to kill us. What will be, will be.

If Maresca comes in he'll bring all his own staff (Pep L & Toure out) they all do in fairness. People saying he knows the club, but most of the players he worked with will be gone (Silva, Stones etc, even Rodri maybe)

From the Guardian reporting on the embargoed press conf:

“The hours before the game, I feel it [pressure] but the process between games I am more calm. Last season was 24 hours thinking ‘what will happen at the club if we will not qualify for the Champions League?’ I felt it a lot,” Guardiola said. “This season we won the Carabao Cup, [reached the] FA Cup final again and still fighting against Arsenal, so what can I say? It is really good. I would have loved to go through in the Champions League but the level is higher and it will be good learnings for me for the next season.”

Its a strange thing to say for someone who has already made a decision to leave.
Did the medias heads all sink to the floor Kevin Keegan style as he revealed this ...

We all know it’s not boards, or clubs owners that gets a manager sacked. It’s fans. Vinnie wound get time, not sure a Maresca type would if results go badly. However, we trust the process.

I'm still absolutely firmly of the opinion that he isn't going. If I'm wrong so be it, but I've had people in the club laughing at me for listening to press pack tittle tattle. And I keep coming back to the simple fact that it would be the biggest news story of the season and maybe the biggest in the league since Haaland arrived or Klopp left. If anyone had it well enough sourced to write it, they'd just write it. Their 'feelings' about Pep leaving have been around since 2020.
