Everton (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Turned out a good point at the end of the day. Unfortunate for us that we made critical errors but i can take that. We are a fairly new team especially at the back and i suppose mistakes will happen, hopefully the lads learn from it and take away the positives going forward. Still a great season for us and 18 other teams would swap with us in a heart beat. Football is a short term sport and there is always another season around the corner to improve and go again. As long as we are competitive, and we most certainly are, then we should be happy about that. Its only a game.

his worst game of the season
I felt, from the off, that Bernie was rushing. Aware of GD, probably. Scrabbling to get the ball down for a quick corner and take it - this was just 5 minutes or so in.

It reminded me of David Platt against San Marino when we needed a shed load to have a chance - he was collecting the ball for their goal kicks and throw-ins. Bernie wasn't that bad, but seeing him like that last night brought that San Marino match to mind.

Everton had far better chances than we did. Ndiaye was guilty of poor finishing

The chances we missed were early doors mainly .....
Everton's xG was 2.77, ours was 1.45. Abysmal for a team needing to win the game. Obviously their ten-man defence may have hampered us, but we've spent years playing against parked busses and got past them previously.

It was a flashback to times earlier this season where we had a spell of absolute chaos.

We were easily pinning them in and creating chances, even if most weren't clear cut and with a 1-0 lead just needed to keep doing the same things. But Everton pushed a bit further forward and we engaged in a physical battle we will never win. Bernardo was as guilty as anyone for being sloppy in possession. We kept trying to progress the ball from the back, but with Everton more committed played some horrific football and just couldn't get out.

We got away with it largely thanks to Donnarumma but then Guehi makes the mistake and we capitulate.

What was positive is that we did regroup and get back into the game, taking a valuable point. We can't look too far back - I don't think it's worth adding it to the dropped points at other times this season. We got back into the game and rescued something which is a great display of our mentality. But to get to our very best we don't have that 13 minute spell, we get the 2nd goal and play keep ball.

The aim now is to win all of our remaining games, including the FA Cup final. Two domestic trophies would be an excellent season, if we get to 83pts that's 12 more than last campaign and if you look at points dropped from winning positions this calendar year that's another 12 and we're looking at comfortably winning the title.
Huge tactical error from us that must have left big Erl scratching his head, when team's press us like that (which is rare) there's our chance to get a ball in behind their relatively high line. There is no one better in the world at 1 v 1's..(as his wonderful goal demonstrated).I'm not a huge fan of some of Erl's play, I think you have to be 'cuter' in the prem, and have a touch closer to Kane's, which he can pull off at times but i think that takes a greater level of awareness to drop deeper to drag CH's out of position. This is not Erl's forte, but last night was made for him, just needed to take advantage earlier AND it would have dampened Everton's enthusiasm to press so high with the threat of exposing themselves to a big Erl 1 v1 ..that second goal, i keep watching it over and over, the composure to dink the ball like that under so much pressure. He is a unique player in those situations = Use this threat to make team's drop their high press!! crazy that the players on the pitch, or 'staff' didn't spot this opp earlier!

It's the usual meltdown, everybody looking for someone to blame but apart from the bizarre offside rule (and there was a hint of offside for their third, probably wasn't but no cameras, no VAR, no checks), and for the second I thought Khusanov was fouled. But we know, or should, that we're not quite there yet in terms of being title challengers yet here we are, still in with an (abeit outside) chance.

But nobody has given Everton any credit, it's the usual [insert team we're playing this week here] hate nonsense, but to be fair to them they put 3 past Chelsea a couple of weeks ago, only lost their derby to a 1000th minute goal, and I think that's the 5th time they've scored 3 goals this season which is rare for a mid-table team. We all knew it was going to be a tough match, yet suddenly everyone seems surprised that's exactly how it turned out. I said ahead of the match that I thought this was likely to be tougher than Bournemouth.

He was well on for their 3rd mate.

My sentiments entirely, to allow a team a 2 game advantage at this stage of the title run in was ludicrous and so advantageous, you couldn’t make it up.
In reality, we shouldn't have a chance of being this close this season. We have taken 6 x months to find a blend that works. Rodri injury killed us. Poor tactics when they were pressing (pump the ball behind them for a chance - get them dropping deeper) also...the added time goal for me, a bit suspect...sky's directive?

Finally some level headed, sensible posting.

If there were 10 games to go, that was a great point............alas....
That's more or less what I've said elsewhere on here .... if we'd scored those three goals at Old Trafford a few months back to grab a 3-3 draw there, i would have been delighted ..... but a draw last night felt more more like a loss simply because we have so few games left, and we are trying to win a title chase.

If the situation was reversed, the Sky BBC media would be crowing that Arsenal had 3 home games and one away whereas City have only 2 away & one home

But no - Arsenal have won already. Let’s see what West Ham & Palace do
