16 | Rodri 2025/26

We need him against Chelsea and Bournemouth away from home.

We should be able to get the job done without him at home against Brentford and Crystal Palace.
 
It’s a huge issue. The team does not function to the required level when he is out. Lost this league because of it.

Shit but what can u do. Hopefully buy some better players to step up when he is not available. Last season was awful without him.

Huge midfield upgrade needed.

Guimaraes? No, thanks. He'll spend a good chunk of the season suspended. And I'm not sure that Wharton is worth what Palace wii be asking for him. Anderson; yes, we should be in for him and, apparently, he's expressed a preference to move to the filthy oily cheating club.

Midfielders should be lining up, wanting to play for Pep. We should have the pick of the bunch, but it's been panic, reactionary signings at squad filler level. In such a key area, the planning just baffles me
Reijnders, Kovacic, Gonzalez, Phillips... utter guff

Not having this.

Phillips' career was ended by the shoulder injury he got during the summer he signed for us in 2022. Hasn't been the same since for any other team and sadly his downfall has nothing to do with City.

Reijnders was in the Serie A team of the season for 24/25 and his signing made sense on paper. He brought goals and technical ability. Sometimes it just doesn't work out but it's not for a lack of planning.

But Kovacic and Gonzalez have both been good squad options in their time here and both have provided decent cover for Rodri during his injury troubles. Hopefully they both stay because they still have lots to give us.

Nothing baffling about any of them and throwing Philips into the list is a bit daft and pointless.

Maybe it was a bit melodramatic and slanted
They each have undoubted qualities but in my opinion we need to be aiming a lot higher

Kovacic is a career squad player and is not someone who elevates the team
Reijnders has really only had 1 good season but was maybe worth a gamble. But he's very one dimensional
Jury is certainly out with Gonzalez but he's already 24 and hasn't really ripped up trees and are we seriously expecting huge improvement?

People were critical of Rodri when he was 25. He didn't make the CL final in Porto weeks before turning 25 and some/many thought he was miles worse than prime Ferna...

You could argue 'we lost this league' (it's not actually over yet) because of him. He missed the opening 4-0 win and played in the following 4 (Spurs was just 15 minutes though) which garnered just 4 points.

Edit: We won 11 and lost 2 of the following 13 games without him. He came back and we promptly drew 3 and lost 1.

Rodri had around 20 caps by the time he was 25. Maybe I'm being that person and far too critical, but I just don't see it with Gonzalez
