14 | Nico Gonzalez - 2025/26

Just don't understand being dropped completely, he was superb in the first half of the season, less so since January and yes he had a stinker against Everton but that doesn't justify getting frozen out, we wouldn't even be in the final if it wasn't for him, sad for him.

I dont think Pep trusts his touch and passing unfortunately.

Might be a bigger midfield clear out than we thought.

He just hasn’t taken advantage of his recent chances when called upon to replace Rodri. He looks too scared to play the ball forward and looks a bit soft in challenges. Maybe that’s due to not playing regularly, but that’s the role he has for the immediate future.

As much as I think he’s been ok this year, I think he’s a Spurs, Villa level player. Give him time he may improve and take one touch instead of two, three, four, but I think Pep’s made his mind up.

I think this guy has the ability to be class, even when he was playing very well at the start of the season Pep was constantly on him and in the public eye aswell. I think he was trying to compare and get him to be Rodri which he is not. He isn’t even a natural CDM, more an 8 IMO. But I reckon he could hold down that 6 for years. We write off young players too much in this club cos they arnt the second coming of Busquets.

Saying that with how he has been frozen out I reckon he snapped at Pep after that Everton game and told him to suck his mum. Midway through that Bournemouth game and large parts of the final he looked physically fucked. Surely that means you have Nico G on the bench to give him some respite. The fact he wasn’t must mean he must have bit back pretty hard at Pep and as he is going he just threw him away. Hopefully Maresca talks to him and gives him a chance.

Pep's out the door. Maybe he gets a chance to play in his natural position as an 8. Some of his hesitancy as you point out might be down to him not wanting to make a mistake in an unfamiliar role...

I think I have watched this video like 1000 times.

He had a very decent first half of the season, I even stopped thinking about Rodri and enjoyed every game.

TBH he wasn't playing at Rodri's level, but there was potential and big room for improvement.
And at the age of 23-24, he wasn't supposed to be playing at prime Rodri's level, like Rodri himself wasn't that good when he first arrived and needed 2-3 years to become the best in world football.

Everton game was disaster, I agree, he made a lot of mistakes, stupid mistakes, but that doesn't erase his contributions in the first half of the season.

He had very good away game in FA Cup, against Newcastle, so second half wasn't that bad, except the Everton game.

What I mean is, let's look at Arsenal. They have Zubimendi and Rice.
Even if Rodri leaves and Anderson arrives, I don't think Nico + Anderson duo, will be worse than Arsenal duo.

A lot of players struggled there. Kalvin Phillips was bad, Matheus Nunes also.
Only Nico was able to deliver stable results there, I think it was Pep's fault more, he should have played him more and maybe his form won't have declined that much.

But potential is there. This video highlights his abilities and level he played during October-December period.
