Two jailed for death by dangerous driving

I never forget an elderly neighbour once said to me that “a car is a killing machine”. This must be more than 40 years ago, when I passed my test. It’s something that should be told to young people because it sticks in your memory.

Cunts.

Why do we allow cars that can travel at 139mph to be made when the maximum legal speed limit is 70mph?
Or persist with making 2-ton SUV's that are statistically 44% more likely to injure someone in a collision than a standard car.

Too many people lack the skill to control them and it shows. They should stick to Hyundai i10's - that's about their level.

Whilst I hear what you’re saying, chill out, do we ban everything that is possibly dangerous?

I’m exactly the same, you can almost always rely on some bellend to do something stupid on most journeys these days. The driving test needs to be far harder, ideally with some form of intelligence test included.
Test should be retaken every five years, at least people would have to think about their driving in the run-up to their tests. Obviously this would also need to be supported by harsh penalties for those caught driving without a licence.
However, while retests may help with those who suffer from falling personal driving standards, they will be no use whatsoever in the case of people who can drive well but choose to act like utter fuckwits when they get behind the wheel.
I actually find it impossible to believe a car reached 139mph on Kingsway, but if it did then I doubt any form of driver training would prevent the carnage that ensued.

No but there’s literally no need for anything to do that speed, in the uk the limit is 70, in usa its 55/65, what is the need for something to be able to do twice or more. All these new cars have lane assist, collision avoidance etc etc all brought in to help save people lives yet the one thing that would make a huge difference is limiting the speed of cars yet no one does it.

They filmed their speed pal, cunts.

That's how we keep people safe, no? And I didn't say anything about banning them, I said manufacturers should stop producing them. The SUV is a pointless machine; it's oversized for no reason, isn't 'sporty' and is mostly bought by posers who want Range Rovers but can't afford Range Rovers, nor seem to have the skill to have the awareness required to control such vehicles on the road but there are no restrictions preventing people from doing so.

If you want to ride a bigger bike (engine size) in the UK, you have to take the appropriate testto prove you are capable of controlling it. Same rule should apply for car drivers imo. Most people should stick to a Kia Picamto, because they simply cannot drive anything larger safely.

Currently deciding between an i10 and a Picanto to replace my XC90 (true!) but now you've worried me that everyone will think I'm a twat who can't drive. I remember reading something about a bloke who managed to get 500bhp out of a modified 1.4 Alfa MiTo so that's probably a better way to go I feel. Thank you for your timely input :-)

Trust me, we do. They're the new 'Audi' stereotype driver.
We don't call you guys 'cagers' for nuthin'! :)

In honesty,l I have nothing but respect for courteous safe drivers, and go out of my way to be courteous back, especially when i'm on the pedal machine. I've just found that average standard has dropped noticeably, and when there are so many poor drivers, but an increase in larger death machines on the road it's a bad combo.

Also go for a Yaris; much better for reliability.

Hard to disagree about the standard of driving and tbh I think it's a reflection of what's happened in society more broadly. So many people on the roads are completely self-absorbed, it's not about us all travelling safely as road users; it's all about me and where I need to get and how I choose to get there and f**k anyone else. The combination of lack of patience, lack of consideration and lack of observational skills beyond what's under your nose is pretty scary.

Put everyone in go-karts, exposed to the elements (and others) and watch how safely people start driving. With blinkered SUV drivers, inconsiderate Uber taxis, boy-racer Audi/BMW/Mercs, and the rise in psychotic rule-breaking Deliveroo riders, the roads are a gauntlet to navigate.

I'd take the bus but there's no route to work and they're often slower and stink of devil's lettuce.

As an SUV driver (Merc) I have to disagree. They are practical, safe, comfortable and carry a lot of suitcases or cat carriers and groceries. Having an SUV doesn’t mean I drive like a ****. Far from it, I can see further ahead plus despite having a 3 litre engine it’s hardly sports car fast.

However, I do agree that many people are so shit at driving they shouldn’t be behind the wheel of a fucking golf buggy never mind a Kia!

What I do think would make the roads safer, beyond stricter and more regular driving tests, would be if car makers had to limit all vehicles to say 80 mph, and far slower acceleration. Why does anyone even need a car to go at over that speed? Why does it need to accelerate from 0-60 in 3 seconds? It’ll never happen of course, car makers have far too much influence on the world’s economy for that, but having vehicles incapable of the performance some of these bellends want to drive them is pretty much the only way. Even then, doing 70, 80 in a town centre isn’t much better really than 100, makes no difference. I guess built up areas need more calming measures and cameras.

SUV's are oversized, unneccessary turd lumps, especially when you can get the same luggage space and protection in a VW Golf. I genuinely don't see the point of them. Safety? Maybe for the driver inside, sucks to be on the receiving end though, being hit by a 2500kg lump of metal. Chances of being killed when hit by an SUV are 44% chance higher than being hit by a family car and 82% higher in children.

Most of the time they are driven there is only one single person inside it. One. What is the car for, seriously? They aren't 'sporty' and they aren't for 'utility' purposes either. If it was, you'd buy a small van. It's seen as an 'all-rounder' vehicle which doesn't actually do anything well or serve any purpose to the people who are buying them.

They're taking up way too much space on the roads and on parking in side-streets as these vehicles were never designed with Britain's small streets in mind. They're just a fashion trend of motor vehicle. They're the size of a 4x4 with non of the off-road capabilities or benefits OR requirements needed for travelling on city roads that a small family car or supermini can't provide. If you live in a remote part of Cheshire or do regular motorway journeys, sure. Urban Manchester? Absolutely no reason to own one.

They serve no purpose other than ego, IMHO, and with so many people buying them without the skills to control such a large vehicle, i'd petition to have the Cat C1 limit lowered so they can be included in 'large van' status, so only people with proven licences can drive them. That should sort out the wheat from the chaff. Many drivers seem to see the point, but I just don't get the point of them at all.

I’ve never got my head around that, myself.
“Manufacturers design cars for a global market, including regions without speed limits (like the German Autobahn). Additionally, high-performance capabilities are heavily favored by consumers for marketing and ego appeal.”

There a woman who picks up her kids at school on our street has a Mercedes G wagon, it’s fucking massive, bigger than my van, what possible use would she have for that it’s like a frigging tank, it’s wider than one side of the road. It’s never seen off road and never will I reckon, bin the fuckers.

Funnily enough, we do live in a suburban part of Cheshire, and do make multiple long journeys a year. It works for us. Got to be honest if someone drives like a prick then they’ll kill somebody whether they’re in an SUV or a tiny hatchback, makes no difference. It’s the driver that’s the important factor; their attitude and skill, or usually lack of it.
