Two jailed for death by dangerous driving

Funnily enough, we do live in a suburban part of Cheshire, and do make multiple long journeys a year. It works for us. Got to be honest if someone drives like a prick then they’ll kill somebody whether they’re in an SUV or a tiny hatchback, makes no difference. It’s the driver that’s the important factor; their attitude and skill, or usually lack of it.
Then it works for you, kudos. :)

But they are completely unnecessary for the majority of people driving them, who lack the skill to control such a large, heavy vehicle. Personally, if I wanted a vehicle of that calibre, i'd buy a 4x4; Dacia Duster, Defender, Land Cruiser, etc. They do everything a SUV does, but better.

No but there’s literally no need for anything to do that speed, in the uk the limit is 70, in usa its 55/65, what is the need for something to be able to do twice or more. All these new cars have lane assist, collision avoidance etc etc all brought in to help save people lives yet the one thing that would make a huge difference is limiting the speed of cars yet no one does it.
Can’t speak for all the US but all the freeways around here are 80 mph and 70 on a lot smaller roads. For a while Montana implemented a speed limit of ‘reasonable and prudent’ which essentially left it to the drivers to assess. The feds overturned it in 1998.

That's how we keep people safe, no? And I didn't say anything about banning them, I said manufacturers should stop producing them. The SUV is a pointless machine; it's oversized for no reason, isn't 'sporty' and is mostly bought by posers who want Range Rovers but can't afford Range Rovers, nor seem to have the skill to have the awareness required to control such vehicles on the road but there are no restrictions preventing people from doing so.

If you want to ride a bigger bike (engine size) in the UK, you have to take the appropriate testto prove you are capable of controlling it. Same rule should apply for car drivers imo. Most people should stick to a Kia Picamto, because they simply cannot drive anything larger safely.
I have no problem with making people do the appropriate testing. I did my ‘Star Rider’ course the first year it was implemented, even became an instructor for a while. Gradually worked my way up to a Z1100 and glad that I took the time to get there. Yes I was a menace but don’t regret riding the way I did, it was fun.

Really I thought the 55 was still a thing, I remember my mate been pulled on the way to Vegas in 1990 for doing 65, there was nothing on the road and fuck knows where this copper was hiding we never saw him until the flashing lights come on. He was told he had to appear in court two weeks later obviously that never happened and I always wondered if there was a warrant against his name if he ever returned.

I’ve just walked past the latest BMW i4 it has a screen bigger than my TV, it’s fucking huge, now great if you are fat bastards but there’s just no need for a car that size, it’s fucking ego pure and simple. There’s nothing a smaller Kia etc couldn’t do.

I’ve been over here for getting on forty years and that had all gone when I got here. Once I get on the freeway I normally set my cruise at 85 and let the traffic stream past me. When you get to bigger cities like Boise, Salt lake etc then it’s best to just keep with the traffic which can be way faster.

We’d probably struggle to fit the in-laws plus luggage in a small Kia tbh. Cheaper brands do tend to be a bit plasticy and less refined inside too. I’ve always bought German, on my second Merc now, pretty similar dimensions to a BMW X4. It does have a nice big screen too which helps with reading the satnav!

I’m not going to lie, it’s partly ego, but I don’t see why I need to be ashamed of that. If you can afford nice stuff why not? Life is too short not to make the best of it. Tragically so in the case of the poor lad hit by those two wankers.

Cunts.

Why do we allow cars that can travel at 139mph to be made when the maximum legal speed limit is 70mph?
A pedestrian being hit by a vehicle at 40mph plus will pretty much lead to a fatality. Limit a car to 70mph and some people will still choose to drive 70mph on a 30mph road. I've no real issue regarding the size or top speed of a vehicle somebody chooses to drive, the bigger problem for me is that there will always be dickheads who think everything revolves around themselves, riding/driving everything from push-bikes to 44 ton lorries. We never really hear of the thousands of road users that, despite not being directly involved in an accident, were actually the cause of one.

I think with the innovations of the driverless taxi etc I reckon we are 20 years from cars just driving themselves (I know they can do it now, Tesla) but they will all be linked so they will slow , speed up etc and keep traffic running, unfortunately older cars will still exist but once they’ve gone then hopefully you’ll see them all in sync.

RS3 cuzzy send it brooo. Why do the cunts driving always survive.
Instinct of the driver is to turn away or manoeuvre the vehicle in a defensive manner that will protect them the most, so often the passenger/s come off the worst.

I have a good friend who lost his 18 year old brother last year as a passenger in his mates car. The driver’s reactions saved him, but likely killed my mate’s brother.

Test should be retaken every five years, at least people would have to think about their driving in the run-up to their tests. Obviously this would also need to be supported by harsh penalties for those caught driving without a licence.
However, while retests may help with those who suffer from falling personal driving standards, they will be no use whatsoever in the case of people who can drive well but choose to act like utter fuckwits when they get behind the wheel.
I actually find it impossible to believe a car reached 139mph on Kingsway, but if it did then I doubt any form of driver training would prevent the carnage that ensued.
Here is an idea Rio Ferdinand will approve of. If you lose your licence through drink / drugs, then 4 times a year you have a random test. No notice, no advanced warning. You get a phone call at 8am and have to drive to your nearest police station within the next 3 hours where you get tested. Don’t turn up like Rio? Well unless a very good excuse like in hospital or out of the country (in which case you provide the date of return and get the call within 3 days of returning), then 4 weeks in jail.

The I405 in CA was 65 when I drove it last week.

Like I said, not speaking for everywhere, I do know that I can hop on I15 at Idaho Falls and drive at 80 for 600 miles plus. Maybe one of the reasons that CA is losing population and people getting out of that over policed and over taxed nightmares. Beautiful State and place but a bureaucratic nightmare, shame

It’s the UK race to the bottom mentality…..if you want a nice car and can afford it, there’s nothing wrong with that

I was driving across central Pennsylvania last summer and the limit was 75 mph on US-22. Not that anyone actually observed it.

Or persist with making 2-ton SUV's that are statistically 44% more likely to injure someone in a collision than a standard car.

Too many people lack the skill to control them and it shows. They should stick to Hyundai i10's - that's about their level.
I've just bought a big fuck off motor. It has cameras that warn me if anything comes to near, sensors on every corner that warn me, head up display warning if something in front of me isn't moving, auto braking, distance warning, lane cross warning, won't move unless i have a seat belt on, warns when something is coming up on the outside/inside and even tells me off if the stereo is too loud.
Worst drivers on the roads are all in little 2 door motors

Currently deciding between an i10 and a Picanto to replace my XC90 (true!) but now you've worried me that everyone will think I'm a twat who can't drive. I remember reading something about a bloke who managed to get 500bhp out of a modified 1.4 Alfa MiTo so that's probably a better way to go I feel. Thank you for your timely input :-)
Neighbour proudly told me last week he went around a bend in Whitefield at 120 mph in his souped up rally style toyota 2 door.
