The Squad planning thread

Similarly, we could see Rodri move.

It’s the most important part of the team, but none of us really know what tools Maresca will have at his disposal nor how he will deploy them. As I said, it’s the area of greatest concern.
I think we need to replace Gonzales and Reinjders as well as Bernardo realistically if we want to compete in Europe.

Anderson and 3 others.

Would be a shame to see Fernandes from the hammers go to United as indicated in the press. He’s what people think Wharton is, his long passing and technique is fantastic but he has an engine and workrate to go with it unlike Wharton.

Imo he’d be like a Vintinha/ Neves type signing when they went to PSG.

Although they've gone down Fernandes will still be a tricky deal - Southampton have a decent sell on clause by all accounts. which is why 80m was being said not long ago

The right wing market is really not good , you’ve got Diomande , Barcola maybe Pardo in France that’s about it. Maybe Pedro Neto there’s not a lot

Diomande is very expansive with a small sample size, Barcola will again be expensive and has a lot of the same limitations as Savinho imo, Pardo hasn’t played off the right an awful lot

I fear that level of churn in midfield would likely set us back another season.
If Rodri is remaining, then with Anderson/Gonzalez/Reijnders we are solid. We could use Rodri more wisely but also use combinations of the others to keep the tempo up (so many second-half collapses) and to play different styles.

If Maresca plays how he did at Chelsea, the good thing for Rodri is he’s never isolated, he either has Anderson next to him, or he has the inverted full back most likely O’Reilly next to him, takes a lot of the defensive work load off him., Same if Gonzalez plays there too Anderson just makes the 6 s job easier. Anderson would solve so many issues.

No, need a right side player if Savinho goes, Doku and Semenyo can have the left covered between them.
If Savinho were to go, which I hope is not the case, I still think Wilson would be a sensible short-term replacement. I’m against bringing in yet another ‘project’, because it simply leads to the first-choice player being flogged into the ground while the newcomer finds his feet. We need to have the squad depth to ensure that Doku and Semenyo are simmering in the spring and not going off the boil.

Agreed. I presume you don’t see a place for Kovacic.

It depends if you think it’s worthwhile giving Savinho another season to develop or going for a Wilson type.

I think Savinho is optimal because he can play both wings. He has already bulked up since his injury and has the ‘blessing’ of the summer off, which means he should be ahead of Doku and Semenyo when Maresca picks his first teams. However, should he choose to leave, I’d favour experience over promise.

It's really interesting that through all the tactic videos about Maresca and his system , Savinho is the only winger that is a natural touchline winger we have in the squad. Each person thats done an analysis of Marescas system has highlighted that.

Depends, if Reijnders does go then I wouldn’t be against Kovacic staying for a year, alongside Gonzalez Rodri and Anderson and seeing where we are next summer with Rodri and Gonzalez, and also we’d have a better idea of where we see O’Reilly’s future position.
For me just numbers wise it’s either Reijnders or Kovacic, or a new signing to replace both,to be honest I suspect like Lewis the PL has just become too physical for Reijnders and Lewis which in some ways is a shame.Out of everyone Gonzalez is the one I’d be trying hardest to keep.

I actually think that we’d be better keeping Reijnders and Gonzalez.

Lewis was fine for doing the running of others in Champions League group stages, but the format change rules out such a luxury, and he hasn’t the pace and physicality required to play in a mobile midfield.

I recently rewatched our collapse in Paris and was struck by how Kovacic was still guilty of the same risky dribbling. Alas, he’s not good enough to supplant Foden or Cherki, and he’s not robust enough to play box-to-box. Getting him (or anyone for that matter) to leave before their contract expires is the tricky part.
