Holidays

Just come back from our 12-day trip to Canada, and it was one of the best holidays we’ve ever had.

Ottawa was amazing. The Museum of Canadian History is gobsmacking architecturally and the totem pole gallery was awe-inspiring. Will have to go back when they’ve finished the parliament building.

Quebec City was beautiful, and although there was a lot of rubbish on the streets in Montreal, there are still some great things to see.

Toronto was 10/10 amazing. What a city. The view from the islands back to the city skyline (both day and night) was sublime, and with Niagara Falls just two hours away on the train (one of the best days of my life) it goes joint top of my city break recommendations list alongside Seville.

We did the trips between the cities using Canada’s Via Rail service, which I highly recommend. Every train left on time and the staff were superb.

Plenty of material for the YouTube channel when we sift through all the video footage later this year.

We’ll definitely head back to Canada some day.

Not quite afternoon planned but all turned out ok. Boat from Rhodes to Symi, 3 hours on island then stop at st George's bay for 30 mins swim. In water at back of boat just lounging around. Decided to go out up to front and dive in.

In water few seconds and see one if the crew about to throw lifebelt in to a guy I now realising is struggling to keep his head above water. Crew throws it and about to jump in bit I told him I got it as by this stage I'm quite close to the guy.

German and couldn't speak any English. Got him to grab the lifebelt, held his head above water as I kicked round the boat to back where ladders are. Then 2 other guys came to help get him out of water

Well done OB, there’s been far too many water related deaths this year.

Cheers mate, enjoying a well earned beer back in Rhodes now. Thankfully he didn't need any further medical attention. Found him after got off the boat to make sure he was ok.

Through interpretor he said he couldn't understand when I was telling him hold onto lifebelt, try to keep head above water and if can kick legs to help me out. He said he didn't think last more than few more seconds in water without going under

Just booked Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 from Southampton to New York at the end of the month, staying at my son’s place and returning a week later.
Any tips for getting to Southampton the day before, hotels for staying a night in Southampton and tips whilst on the QM2?

Going to Porthleven in a few weeks, anyone been, any tips ? recommendations ?
Enjoy the Skinner's ales - Lushington's my fave, usually a good selection in the Ship Inn, nice but touristy. The locals go to the Atlantic Inn on the other side of the harbour - great sunset views from the patio. Philps is the best pasty shop in Cornwall imo.
Kota Kai does nice fusion food - there used to be a cheaper kitchen side to the posher restaurant, equally as good. If you're doing Lands End, drive to Sennen Cove and walk it from there to avoid the crowds and the cheese.

Sounds amazing! Did you arrange all of this yourself pal with transfers etc?

Sailed on QM2 twice, but not for 20 years now so may have changed somewhat. Was excellent both time, all food and drink was top notch, lovely bars and public spaces (nothing too blingy). Also you knew where you stood on the dress code, i.e. formal nights most gents were in dinner suits. I've been on some cruises where you'd have some people in dinner suits, others in shorts and t-shirts (nothing against that btw), but it didn't add to the experience, you either felt under dressed or over dressed.

I suspect it's maybe a bit more relaxed now as cruising moves with the times.

One difference would be, ours was sailing round the Caribbean, so shore days and sunbathing. Won't be an option on yours, but should be plenty to keep you entertained onboard.

Overall, a great ship though, a proper Liner and I am sure you'll have a great time. Make sure you are on deck for the arrival into New York, sailing under the Verrazzano Bridge (the ship was built with this in mind) is something else.
