When you say you can only play Yaya in a 3, where exactly do you mean and with who? For me he was playing in a 3 the other night with Fernandinho and Silva.
no he wasn't. a 4-4-2 is exactly the same as a 4-2-3-1 (which we were playing) in defence. silva sits up top with aguero.

Ermmm no, no it isn't, one of these formations has two strikers and the other has one.

So what you're telling me is that the player in the middle of the three doesn't have defensive duties? Shouldn't help the midfield out?

Like many on here I'm getting sick and tired of this exciting football MP insists on playing. It's so good it's becoming tedious.

I pine for the defensive solidity of the Stuart Pearce era. Those were the days.

that's exactly what i'm telling you. anyone who has watched a 4-2-3-1 in the defensive phase could tell you that. off the ball, the vast majority of 4-2-3-1s, including us, arsenal, chelsea, united etc. play 4-4-2. its only when in possession that one player drops and the other stays forward

No he wasn't Silva was slightly ahead and only dropped back to help the struggling defence. YaYa can only play the centre of a three with two players who are good at defending either side - Delph/Fernandinho (ideally) Fernando if no other choice. But Fernando isn't very good when we go over to the attack. In a two he is dreadful in Europe. Sadly the number 10 role is the only one YaYa can play in Europe. Which has implications on the left in that only one of Sterling/Sliva can start. When Mangala/Cliche get fit the situation will improve. It's their put the strengths of Cliche and Mangala hide it somewhat.
-----------------------Hart
Zaba/Sagna Kompany/Otamendi Mangala/Otamendi Cliche/Kolarov
------- Fernandinho ---- Delph/Fernando
---- DeBruyne YaYa/Silva Silva/Sterling
----------------- Aguero

The opposition purposefully attack the space behind Yaya and overload on Kolorov in CL games and we don't deal with it. YaYa doesn't see the problem. Incidentally Spurs also attacked this space. It's time our manager faced up to what the limitations are when we play YaYa.

Ok, if you say so.

Attacked what space? Yaya was playing further up against Spurs with the Ferns behind him (and he was useless with his back to goal).

This is the sort of thing that irritates me i.e. saying that we should have been 3-0 down: we should have scored first but we didn't; just as BMG didn't score 3.

We should have scored twice in the first half. An in form Aguero would have scored both of those chances.

1st half was bad and was decisive in taking sterling off. Have criticised him in the past for not changing things until late in the game so I hold my hands up and say well done to him for that.

fair play to MP today...changed the shape and got kdb wider and then must have given an absolute blocking at half time which worked a treat...lets have more it Manuel

Silva majestic 2nd half he has to play in the centre. My worry about defending remains a good team would have put us to the sword by half time. Joe excellent again. Fair play for changes made at half time but set up and tempo first half not good

Yep got to give him some credit today turning it around. Thought the worst in the first half but credit where credit due.

Agreed - he often gets stick for his substitutions and tactics but the changes at HT were just what was required - I though Navas did well and linked up really well with Zab

Thought the half time sub was an obvious one to make, but pushing Silva up alongside Kun was a great move. Those two along with De Bruyne were untouchable for 20 minutes

I'll hold back on lavishing him with praise for now.

Sterling limped off, so that change was probably forced. And he'll be back with Sterling on the left and De bruyne on the right in our next game(fitness permitting).

This win is entirely down to the players..Namely Aguero, Silva and De Bruyne.

When was the last time he got it right from the start?
