City Vs Seville Champions League Post Match Thread

Agree, but I am not sure given the players we had out that we could play a game we had to really win without Toure. Our attacking options / creativity were really limited and we couldn't keep the ball to get our forwards in the game so you'd have started without Toure? It was a marginal decision, and that tells you how far Toure has fallen.

marv i'm not saying he shouldn't of started, what i am saying is playing him as part of a midfield two is now unworkable at this level.

i never felt we had any control in the game until fernando came on and we tweaked the formation.

it was yaya's burst forward and pass to KDB that created the win, yaya's effectiveness is now in forward positions and not anywhere near a defensive midfield role.

i've always said he is a steam train going forward and puffing billy coming back and that is only going to get worse, we need to utilise him in the best way

I think I finally understand champions league football and I think manchester city have too and mixed with the premier league and league cup and fa cup its a very long season. its just about the result forget the nice on the eyes great pass and move stuff just bag the 3 points in the groups and get the job done with as little fuzz and work you can.we have gone into games like last night with all guns blazing and playing some great stuff and giving it 110% and losing then we are playing catch up in the group and needed to beat the top seed in the last game of the group and come to the knockouts out we are on our feet with blowing our load before Christmas chasing the dream

in the last 2 games Manchester city have just played within themselves got the job done and took the points late on.now I think its not just being lucky but very well played and down to the manager in the setup and if the old Manchester turned up last we would have lost by 3 goals and out on our feet after the 60min mark in giving it 110% right from the start and playing 100mph good on the eye stuff for only to see them (the other team) go up field and score on the break

I think the penny dropped after the home game to juve we just went about it the wrong way and lost again and give it 100% and nothing to show for it at the end.champions league football is about the points in the group stage forget the nice on the eye stuff and 100mph of the English game just get the points

so lets hope the lesson we learnt on the open night at home to juve was the start of Manchester city in the champions league just get the points won and take on the knockouts with a bit more still in the bank in fact just play like last night and get to the final and then play nice football who cares in the end if you are crap in the groups if you end up winning it

I know, what the fuck was that all about?!

He gave an apologetic wave to the south stand after the danger was over.

i thought all the hard work to get in front was going to go up in smoke with that moment of madness, thank fuck they blew it

Once again we were hugely naive, bordering on arrogant. People can make all the excuses, but we should have been beaten lst night, individual quality has again bailed us out.

Far too many flaws with the system, the lack of pressure, lack of cohesion defensively. We're going to get a hammering soon because the way we play is suicide with the players at our disposal.

Pellegrini will be gone in the summer, and whilst I admire the football we've played, his tactics are borderline suicide. He's making two very good CBs in Otamendi and Mangala look vastly ordinary due to the lack of cover.

Why should we have been beaten because the opposition had more possession created less chances and had 2 efforts on target

Wouldn't be much of a thread if people gave their thoughts an hour later, that would be this thread

The match thread is supposed to be as it happens, it's just like chatting to the guy sat next to you at the game or in the pub

Id go to a different pub. It'd be good to read something that takes a bit of thought to write.

The way I look at it is a simplistic idea really, you need luck in cup football, that's what wins matches and ultimately trophies, last night we got a bit at last, yes we were a bit poor, anyone can see that,so no point denying it really, but we got the win which was very important onto Spain for a bit of the same in a fortnight should see us through now

i was telling misses last night he should take bony off bring on nando and push KDB up front, my face when mp did just that,
though i didnt think they were that good, we made them look good imo. bony has confidence holding ball but his shooting is woeful of late. cant wait for vinny to start our defence looks so shakey, though i though managala had a great game, bar the odd mistake.
great game though nice flowing footy, onwards and upwards

I just don't enjoy the majority of champions league games. I ended up going last minute, didn't get in the ground until 15 minutes in as my daughter was late, the South Stand Upper Tier was like a morgue and the football very very flat. I left on 80 minutes to try and get the kids back home at a half sensible time and just in time to see De Bruynes goal on ITV highlights. The premiership games are much more enjoyable.

Yes the performance was not perfect but we dug it out which was important and most pleasing thing for me was that finally we can cope without silva when he is injured, to win without aguero, silva, and kompany shows major improvement,

Given the teams, what we got was exactly what we should have expected.

It is the Champions League for a reason and you have to be at your best. We weren't for very obvious reasons. Very sad that we play key games without key players. it is bound to have an effect
Given the teams? We were hardly fielding a side full of EDS players. Any side would miss Silva and Aguero of course but we had a team full of experienced internationals. I can't believe how much we sat off them. The best teams do everything they can to win the ball back when they lose it. We got the win so maybe it was tactical genius to sit off the opposition, let them walk through our midfield time after time and squander possession when we did have the ball, wait until the last 5 minutes and score a late goal. Maybe that's our masterplan to win the competition. There were some positives - Navas played well as too did Mangala and Otemendi. The substitutions made a big difference so credit to the manager for that. I just don't get why we didn't seem to approach the game with any intensity. I thought the players and the club aspire do participating and doing well in the champions league.

They weren't as good as us player for player, the difference was they tactically out thought us. I disagree that they're one of the better teams in Europe, they aren't even in the top 10 of sides. We have a habit of making good sides look great against us due to poor tactics.

Like I said, when players are out you have to adapt. We again try to impose our possession based game, when we didn't have the players to do so, and off the ball our pressing was non existent.
Totally agree. Sevilla looked average and definitely weakest team in our group. We looked sluggish in the main and wide open at the back.

the big thing to come out of this game is that we held in there, which tells me a lot.

of course eventually a two man midfield which includes yaya will eventually prove to be suicidal.

the manager has got to stop thinking in terms of names but who is right for the position and if that means putting someone's nose out of joint then so be it

once fernando was on we were back in the game in terms of control, it was way too open before then

so chuffed we got the win, KDB is on his way to legendary status if he keeps this up

but what was joe doing right at the end when he threw the ball back to sevilla, i was having kittens when he did that

When Pellegrini was in charge of Malaga he generally played a more attacking formation at home and a more conservative one away. Because we won last night we're now in a good position and I think we'll see more of a tactical switch to ensure we don't get beat in the away leg. We'll still try to win the game but we'll bolster the midfield in my opinion, and similarly against Juventus.

It was a huge game last night and it's a fantastic win. Sevilla haven't started La Liga well but they've beaten Barca and they're an unbelievable side in Europe. Their recent record is incredible even if it's in the Europa League, they've the style of play and the knowledge of how to win games on the European stage and we're generally quite the opposite aside from some small exceptions.

To beat them last night was a great result with the players we had missing.

We got away with it tonight. Bony was absolute shite and our formation and tactics were even worse. MP and his tactical naivety leaves a lot to be desired because tonight we looked bang average. Bony has severely disappointed me after all the high hopes I had for him, he's got his chance to shine and to prove his worth at a club looking to win major honours, but for me I'm now beginning to realise that perhaps this level of football is a step too far for him.

I'm relieved we won, but the victory is utterly tainted by the predictably shit performance and a total return to 442. MP will never learn nor change, and tonight its finally dawned on me this is what we'll be stuck with whilst he's in charge. The summer can't come quick enough........

Fairweather fan. When will you be happy?

People posting "the summer can't come quick enough" in October after a victory in the CL and in the run up to the derby.

In a sea of shit. That'll take some beating. This place.

Mate don't let the deluded hound you out of telling it as you see it. For me a true friend is the one who tells it as it is, not one who tells you what you want to hear. Tonight was fuckin dreadful in spite of the win and anyone who wants to run you down for saying so is a sycophantic dick imo.

Those who were there tonight mostly saw what you probably did as did those who watched it on TV, telling it as you see it is just being honest not disloyal to the club we all love. The person who should be under the spotlight for tonight isn't you or anyone else who saw that crap tonight, it should be the fella called Manuel Pellegrini. He picked the team tonight and chose the formation, so the buck and the fortunate victory lay with him.

So you expected Seville to turn up and roll over. They won the last two Europa leagues. They beat Barcelona last week. They played very well last night and if you didn't notice..City won. Get behind the team, the manager and the club.

Just got back not sure whats been said on here, but Yaya and Bony in the same team does not work. Pair of them are lazy fuckers. Yaya is not a captain.

Yet he was instrumental in both of our goals!
It's a toughy to call, but we have to sacrifice one of our attacking players to accommodate another defensively minded midfielder
If the same players are available for the the next European fixture, I would leave out Bony play Sterling up top, with Yaya behind (as Mancini did on numerous occasions) which is where he will be most effective in European matches, then bring in Fernando

We were by and large awful. Sluggish, off the pace in wide positions defensively and a non existent midfield made for a tough evening.
That said we scored a 91st minute winner and that's what this glorious game is about. No point dwelling on what we didn't do right, just hope that it's sorted for the weekend.
