Bersant Celina and the EDS lads...

I can see the Wikipedia pages now for our young bright team, "One EDS derby defeat defined his time at Manchester City F.C."
We need to put faith in the lads. Youth players either sink or swim when they get faced by their first team football. Some flounder, some flourish. If I was Pelle, I'd put one in every starting XI from now until Pelle goes and ensure three filled the bench.

It was just like watching the 1st team, it was only at the end when they pressed the game that we looked decent. For me the only player that will make the 1st team on tonights performance is Tosin and maybe Aleix Garcia.

I can't disagree, and it's something that's concerned me for a long long time. Our youth teams seem to specialise in producing small, lightweight players, who lack the physicality to ever succeed at senior level. Lopes, Pozo, Suarez, Garcia, Angelino, Maffeo, Celina, Bryan, and I doubt Roberts will prove any different, it's like conveyorbelt. Technically accomplished, but relatively slight in build and playing a slow possession based game with no real power or pace, a mirror image of all the faults of the first team.
I went to the FA Youth Cup Final at Stamford Bridge last May and marvelled at the height, pace and athleticism of the Chelsea lads (particularly Izzy Brown and Solanke) compared to ours. Indeed the only City youngster I saw that night (and it's something we evidently agree on), who I thought might have even a ghost of a chance of progressing to the first team, was the centre half, Tosin Adarabioyo, and seemingly nothing's changed. He was excellent that night up against Solanke, one of the best forwards I'd seen at this level for a long time.
Anyway, I wonder if we don't need a new focus, cos at the moment it feels almost as if we seem to be developing players for La Liga rather than the physically demanding Premiership. United's set up meanwhile is as it was under Taggart, with height, pace and directness at a premium, which is why lads like Lingard and Borthwick-Jackson are able to slot in at senior level so seamlessly.

watched the EDS derby last night and was shocked at the level and movement from a number of players we looked like the first team just laid back and just going through the motions it was very sad to see the youth playing like that. barker was the next big thing to come from the youth setup but your having a laugh if he plays like he did last night at times just walking around and not wanting to get on the ball the so called speed and can beat a man sorry am not seeing it from barker

I was looking forward to watching what pep will have on offer next season but again sorry nothing and we are miles away from anybody on the level of what pep wants and needs.if they can turn up at a EDS games and roll over they are not being trained in the right way. I know the pressure is not all about winning but its a must to show up and give it your all and if the new coach is letting this happen now then he is the wrong man for pep

Totally agree with the comments - The game last night showed me again what I have seen in other EDS games.

We have a number of players that when the going gets tough the so called stars just seem to Wilt and curl up -

Barker, M Garcia

Last night the following were absolutely rubbish -

Bytyqi, Celina, Smith Brown, Glendon

Angelino looks OK but no where near the hype. The only players that looked up to scratch were-

Gunn, Tosin, Bryan and A Garcia

Well they weren't best ever last night, part from the last 10 minutes. Didn't really see anybody who would light up the first team. Their keeper looked good, as did the big quick black lad at the back..!

Harsh to judge Celina on last night's performance, he's not really a central striker and would have been better in his usual creative role.

I said he was rubbish last night, but no matter what position he was in he was totally unable to keep possession of the ball

Considering there's a starting spot up for grabs against Chelsea and possibly more games after that i expected to see more from the EDS last night. Very similar to the first team performances this season and not in a good way. Tosin was the only one that looked remotely capable, none of the forward thinking players looked good enough. Could get ugly at Chelsea if even a handful of those lads end up getting a start.

Kean Bryan isn't small. In fact, when I've seen him he looked like that kid that just got into the school team because he hit puberty way before everyone else and physically abuses the opposition's smaller, more technical players. Plus I don't think Suarez had fully grown when he left us, he was never 6ft in those preseason games.

its nothing to do with the size of a player its the youth setup that's needs to change. I think in England anyway the movement in style has change in the last 2 years in many clubs youth setup and its more about fast moving and getting the ball from the back to front a lot quicker unlike Manchester city we work on passing and keeping the ball and slow the tempo down to our style of play. in the last 2 season the EDS and in the games I seen we don't like to be rushed the teams that play us like that are a lot better unsettling us they press the ball and we just don't know what the hell we are doing and look lost

the feeling in the game at the moment is the old style of play the (English style) if you like is the way forward and when you press teams like Manchester city they are looking for answers and don't understand why we are losing the ball on the edge of our own box. you should not be pressing us on our own box we are Manchester city we pass you to death please give us some respect

I had the feeling last season the manager pellegrini style would buckle under pressure we want so much time on the ball and just pass it around and hold the ball in the back four to much any team that do there home work see it and we just buckle under the pressure from them Liverpool did it to us early on in the season and ever since teams have a right go we just don't have a plan B and if we start going long its augero 5ft.7 looking to head the ball we just don't have any height in or around the box

so be warned under pellegrini if you want it more than city you can have it

Sorry if already been posted.....good news if true, the guy has shown he could have a bright future...

Oh I agree with that, just simply saying I don't necessarily agree with including Bryan in a list of players described as "slight".

Sounds about right with Marwood incharge bring in another loser with a shite pedigree...

Bit better than coaching Chester City though so aiming a bit higher with this one:-)

Being a poor club manager doesn't mean you can't do an important job with young players. Les Reed and Paul Hart were awful managers but had terrific records in developing young players.

Redfern was head of the Leeds academy and reserve team coach so he has pedigree at under age level.

I was surprised at the low level of commitment shown by the EDS against United. Not sure any of them will permanently make our first team. I think Pep has a lot of work to do across the whole club. Admittedly the Under 21 level is not as much as a guide as Under 18 where we may have a better group. The only one on Wednesday who worked hard was Angelino, perhaps because of his experience from New York. Despite lower skill levels, fitness levels are high in the MLS and workrate is important. There seems to be a sluggishness about the whole club at present. If I didn't know better I would say a lot of people may have taken their foot off the gas because they are waiting for the new leader. I hope I'm proved wrong tomorrow against Spurs.

I don't think there was any lack of commitment but more so a lack of ideas. As a couple of people have already said some of the issues on Thursday night looked like the same issues we see from our first team week in week out.

It looked to me like they came up against a well organised, packed defence and some very technical players in a blue shirt didn't have an answer to breaking it down. That itself causes play to be at a slow tempo and a lot of sideways passing and invites the opponent to play the counter attack which United done.

I don't really have an answer to it, but even the first team have plenty of pace on the wings with Sterling and Navas (when fit) but how often are they up against packed defences. As a club, from the first team down, we need to work on a solution to these problems.

P.s. I thought Tosin Adebariyo (sp?) was an absolute rock. And it's not the first time I've watched the eds and thought that.

Fucking hell, one bad game and suddnly they're all shite?
One? Just one?
We've played loads of medicore games under pellers. And most of them have taken place since the 1st half of 2015-15 season. The fact is that in most of them we showed no game, but could still grab a point or three should referee not be a blind wanker.

Pellegrini's non-acquaintance of youngsters as well as luck making a fair % of his sucess or his monotone game and absence of decisions adequate to reality, have been clear since his first season. Since his second season, it has become a problem.

Glad we've finally got rid of him. Hopefully Pep will be as good here and as involved into the game, youths, etc as he's said to be.
