Chelsea post match thread

I wouldn’t normally indulge in a bout of public Pelle-pummelling … but right now, I’m thoroughly disenchanted with Manuel.

Off the top of my head:

a) He came across as petulant and precious with this prolonged hissyfit about a 24-hour delay. He practically announced pre-game that he expected to lose.

b) Yes, we may only have 13 fit senior players … but we have a wealth of talent coming through and he has refused to try and bed them in all season when he has had plenty of chances to do so. Throwing them in as a lump against Chelsea isn’t ideal … or very smart.

c) Having said that, I thought the kids did well for the most part … but Manuel’s formation and tactics were woeful and he sold those kids down the river. 4-4-2? Worse still, time and time again today, Chelsea played a simple one-two to get behind our backline when we stepped up. It was schoolboy tactics … watch the rerun and count how many times a Chelsea player running on to a simple short pass got them in on our goal. That was Manuel’s dopey gameplan, not Chelsea brilliance. They knew exactly how we would set up our backline and how easy it is to unlock it because we don’t track the runner.

d) Willy and MDM … no other manager would have brought those two to our club. They are Manuel’s old pals. MDM has been atrocious since his deal to go back to Argentina fell through in the summer. Denayer is out on loan and we have MDM treading treacle? MDM had one small purple patch for us during his time here … the rest of the time it’s been an old pro getting one last big payday courtesy of his old oppo. He’s too old, way too slow and is just going through the motions. Willy is awful. Just awful. Too slow to get down, too timid to challenge where it counts and his positionial sense is lousy. He was definitely at fault for three of the goals today and arguably culpable in all five. He saved a penalty but it was a poor take by Oscar.

e) If he plays Willy in the League Cup Final, we are already at a disadvantage … if he employs the same tactics he did in the league game against Liverpool we will get thumped. And does anybody feel confident that we are going all the way in the ECL based on our present form?

f) So this season has the potential to turn into a trainwreck unless Manuel gets a grip. We may well end up struggling to hang on to fourth in the league … and there is the nightmare scenario where fourth may not even guarantee ECL if Chelsea go on and win the ECL again and Liverpool win the Europa League (they would both go into next season’s ECL and one country can only have a maximium of 5 places: http://www.theguardian.com/football...s-if-english-teams-win-both-european-trophies ) If we don’t have ECL football, we will struggle to land our summer transfer targets and Pep will start at a huge disadvantage if he only has the Europa League to aim at.

As things stand right now, I think Manuel needs to ditch the gung-ho stuff, start picking teams with an eye on how the opposition play and deploy a bit of pragmatism. He will either go out as a charming man or a daft old goat :)

Absolutely this - I have been saying since Nov 2014 that Pellegrini should go - today was the final straw - he insulted us all who support the club, and the oldest and greatest cup competition in the world, with his comments, selection and tactics. The lowest point of the new regime's reign in my opinion.

Caballero has been absolute bobbins but today's car crash is down to one man and that man is quickly losing his 'charming' title. Disgraceful from the clueless Pellegrini today. And he's been shit all season. No creativity, no game plan and clueless how to react to opposition changes of formation and substitutions like when Chelsea moved Fabregas further forward today Pellers just sat there scratching his head leaving our young lads totally outnumbered. This because Pellers was totally outsmarted by his counterpart. Total liability of a manager. The fact that he's managing the richest club in the world is a fecking joke.

Disagree on your assessment of Pelle today. Of the last 4 Chelsea goals, 3 were down to shit defending and/or goalkeeping and the fifth was a total fluke. Pelle has been told to prioritise the CL since his arrival and his hand today was forced by number of injuries and the long trip to Kiev and back ahead of the Cap 1 Cup.

with the shit form im afraid we are going to lose against kiev then lose againt liverpool in the final and just what after ! a pl game away to liverpool there is possibility of losing 3 games in a row. the team need ti wake up or say good bye to the season

The game showed that introducing half a team of young, inexperienced players isn't going to take you very far in any competition. Pellegrini is right to introduce the lads gradually, in ones and twos in the right situation - Chelsea was always asking too much, if our intention was to earn a win but circumstances gave little choice. And none of the lads let anyone down and all gave proof of their rich promise for the future: City have some real young talent at the club. For the first twenty minutes City were excellent but then Chelsea got a grip on midfield and I feared they might walk away with the game. Their goal may have been the sign of an easy win, but not a bit of it as City went straight from the kick off to equalise. The City lads were not being intimidated physically and showing they had more than a little skill. 1-1 at half time was not undeserved. What City needed was a good first 15 minutes of the second half to keep the scores level and it was the two goals early in the second half which took the game away from us beyond recall.

It was not the kids who let anyone down. What alarmed me is that we saw the same willingness to try and defend the 18 yard line and not drop back an inch further, even when the man on the ball is under no pressure, and this suggests it is club policy and not just Pellers. I hope Pep can put a stop to it. Chelsea caused havoc by exploiting this. It also has to be said that, for all the chances Chelsea created, at least three of their goals were down to very poor goalkeeping and this could have been really demoralising but no heads dropped. And then fatigue had an effect. It was always going to be impossible for the lads to last anything like 90 minutes and stay with Chelsea and so it proved. But one thing we know is that those lads will be better next time, and the time after that....

Pellegrini is good isnt he? Spent his tenure not playing youngsters, continues to give Kelechi limited game time and then out of nowhere plays a full team of kids. The guy has completely lost the plot. Never mind at least we are in 4 competitions inn February, oh wait. Holistic!
Arsenal and Man Utd frequently used the Cups as a way of bringing the kids through but that' part of a strategy of developing young players.

We don't have any such strategy. Just the opposite we've seriously damaged our season by extending the playing career of a couple of players who are finished at this level instead of bringing through young players in a planned manner.

If Pep Guardiola didn't exist, Pellegrini probably would have been sacked after Burnley last year
I went to that game .
And let's just say I wasn't very happy after that defeat .
This seasons been probably worse than last season .
Did we ever lose three in a row under Mancini and Mark Hughes ?

This thread is either full of drama queens or rags,i can't decide
Most agreed with throwing this game and letting the kids play so whats the problem now? we were never going to win

Never mind, they'll be grateful for your encouragement.

Martin Samuel has brutally described the game and the clubs transfer policy of late.

I liked this paragraph

"A good working relationship with director of football Txiki Begeristain is meant to be one of the reasons Pep Guardiola is coming to Manchester City next season. That may be challenged when Guardiola sees what he has been left to work with at his new home. "

We won't win the CL, it's fucking absurd that anybody thinks we will , he goes all fucking season hardly playing any youth then puts six in in one game, sums the fucking idiot up in one game.
Well said.

we've known pretty much for 2 weeks what kind of team we were gonna put out,Pellegrini all but said it,you've been naming daft line ups all week yet when he actually names a daft line up some of you seem to be in a state of shock, its as if he's called your bluff.....

Tosin was arguably our best player today, apart from a few poor passes/clearances. Certainly didn't allow Costa to bully him in the way we feared he might.

Faupala and M.Garcia did well too and Barker looked bright in patches as well.

Overall though I think the youngsters who played can be proud of themselves today. They never looked out of their depth. Even at 4-1 down they still tried to be positive. We could easily have scored three today. (Early Faupala chance, Kelechi backheel, Garcia chance near the end)

Ideally we could have done with another senior figure in midfield alongside Fernando. He and three youngsters was always going to be very difficult but they made the best of it for large parts.

Why do they need a rest for fuck's sake?

Athletes have races every 3 or 4 days in competition season, tennis players play games every 3 or 4 days during competition season, often for 3 and 4 hours a game. This 'rest' things is a complete joke IMO. Do rugby players get rested? Do they fuck!
Except that they do. The gaps between games at the rugby world cup were longer than at the football world cup.

Agreed. Some fans are happy with how today played out, maybe not the result but the way the club has put two fingers up to the establishment. In fact it shows how poorly the club is managed. Spend £200m on the best academy in World football and dont give any of them any game time, instead as you say we've continued with players like MDM.

Surely a strong team today would have been better as we have more chance of winning the FA cup than Champions league
Yes.

BUT

The Champions League is the priority of the Owners and the Carling Cup Final takes precedence over a fifth round FA Cup tie. Pellers has judged ( correctly in my opinion) that in view of our injuries and the travel time to and from Kiev that because of the risk of further injuries and fatigue it was not possible to play a strong side in all three games and that one had to give, and that was today's game, the one of least priority

Isn't it odd when one minute people are outraged about Shearer and Lineker having a pop, whilst mirroring their attitude, opinions and sentiments?
Bigger picture thinking for me, and that's not to say we'll win the CL (that would take an enormous amount of luck at this stage) or beat Kiyv and Liverpool in our next two matches but surely in terms of progress for the season, we had to do what we did today.
Imagine he played Vinny/Sergio and either got injured - I'm not sure that would've been good for those with a short fuse, anger management issues or a high blood pressure on here.
As it stands, we've given ourselves the best possible chance of of getting through a very tough away trip in the CL, whilst still having enough in the tank for Wembley.
