Innapropriate Chants

Remember this classic:

Aye Aye Aye Aye...Fergusons riddled with herpes, Martin Edwards has got aids etc etc etc

That wasn't very politically correct in the 80's.

Think a lot of you are taking unnecessary umbridge at the Johnson song, its self deprecating and as despicable as his actions were Johnson's crimes were not as bad as Bill Wyman's of the Rolling Stones. He is still in the Band and allowed to travel the world despite clearly being guilty of sexual relations with a minor. I don't condone Johnson but he really is being hung out to dry, a harmless song shouldn't give anyone no more than a little self infused tut tut, safe to say moral outrage is way to much. As for the Munich song, that is crass, spineless and disgusting, I'm mid fifties and never, ever sang that song. My best mate's parents died in a plane crash in 1980 and the grief and sorrow that has followed him ever since would make your eyes water. As for the Jihadi John song, what's wrong with that? As long as its in a pub away from kids singing about the demise of low life scum is really ok with me. Elvis Costello once sang about the demise and death of Thatcher (Tramp the dirt down), a sentiment I agreed with, Daesh are scum and singing about them in my book is completely acceptable, its only words, not actions that cause death.

Well he was still in the band until 1993, by which time he had separated (91) and was becoming divorced from Mandy Smith.

On a side note, I'd forgotten that Wyman's son from his first marriage actually married Mandy's mum, the mind boggles.

As for Adam Johnson, I just can't see a case for him at all, he had women on tap but that wasn't enough, thought he was above the law but got found out, arrogance proved his downfall.

The songs are fine by me even if a lot of them are not 'catchy' enough, I loved hearing new ones back in the terrace days, all part of the culture.

Only part of this I smile at is when people say the chants "these days" It was far worse in the 70s 80s and 90s yet a few seem to think the kids of today are the worst ever.

The Adam Johnson chant doesn't 'offend me' - it's just not a chant I want to be associated with - after all, this man used his position as a footballer to groom an underage girl.

I have probably sang worse in my life though!

I find that one "We are City, We Are City, Super City, from Maine Road" particularly disorientating when making match-day travel arrangements.

i used to find the David Silva one " he is the master of Maine Road " very strange

I think any song about the Rags when we're not actually playing the Rags is inappropriate. Same goes for pretty much every other team.

8 pages and no 'Who's that dying on the runway'

I love all these fans saying they never partook in Munich songs

You must have been as rare as York away supporters

The Kippax was always singing about Munich..it was a majority not a minority

Don't be sanctimonious about it now that we live in a pc society
It's a vile song. It's about people dying from a plane crash. It's absolutely fucking rank.

Singing an offensive song, pissed up at a football match is crass but wholly excusable.

Agreeing with a song about stamping on the grave of an elderly lady whose politics you don't agree with marks you out as a moron and a fucking scumbag

Yeah, I've never been one to even use that kind of stuff against opposition fans either though really. I wouldn't laugh and shout about that kind of thing walking down the street and I don't see why people think it's ok in a football stadium. I think I've actually got a pretty dark sense of humour but you should know your audience a bit before you start publicly joking about child abuse and plane crashes etc. But yeah, it does seem especially stupid when it's your own fans, a bit like those Chelsea fans singing "we're racist and that's the way we like it." I like to think that Chelsea fans are the absolute worst but we clearly have a handful who could go toe to toe with them on that front.
It's more than a handful, but these fans are part of every club.

People say it's been going on for as long as they can remember, I remember reading a post by Gary James once and he mentioned that City fans used to greet the opposition by throwing rocks at them as they entered the pitch at Hyde Road.

Football has seemingly always attracted knob heads and always will. It's not a sign of the times, it's just a sign of the sport.

Before the final we were at wetherspoons in Watford, there was a group of about 10 lads, I say lads but some were late 40s all belting out Munich songs. Of all the football chants available to them they focused on that one. Horrible cunts.

And we weren't even playing them, not that that matters.
I find it all a bit of a dick measuring contest. They look down on those who don't sing it and believe they are the bigger blue for singing it.

Cunts the lot of them.

This thread embodies the gentrification of football.

Young men in a boisterous mood having had a few drinks will always sing songs that offend those with delicate sensibilities

Get over yourself

Nailed it mate.

Dont like it or agree then dont join in its that simle but please dont come away from a football ground all offended.

When you're in a pub in a place where there's plenty of neutrals I do get offended that the impression people will get from City fans is the one set by these types of dicks.
I'm only talking about the Munich chants here, the Adam Johnstone and Jihad John songs will always go on in and around the concourses and like you say, I'll choose not to join in.

Thats a fair enough examle of when you would possibly be a tad embarrased i will admit.

Idiots are idiots unfortunately and football and beer has always been a perfect cocktail in bringing them out but its imperitive to remember that 99% of us can have a beer, have a laugh and enjoy a game with mates and appreciate the banter that goes with it.
