Reminds me of this one.

Love that picture, it makes no sense to me

Height really isn't as important as the way you put yourself about. Navas is short, but he's very good in the air, Sterling is tiny, but he's strong enough and has the attitude to shove players much bigger off the ball.

In the modern game, with today's refereeing, physicality is less important. You want to have some tall lads at the back because set pieces will be an issue, but for a central midfielder there's no problem with being small.

Oh I agree definitely, but it defo helps a little to have a physical presence in a premiership midfield. As Nev was saying, if he wasn't a footballing genius, like a Silva or KDB etc, then it'd defo help if he was to be a bit stronger and bigger like Fernandinho. It may not stop him, but it's not ideal.

Denis Wise was a midget and held his own in the middle for years.

I'd doubt if Roy Keane (split) was much taller than Byrne. Was he?

Exactly.....what a ridiculous argument.......probably one of the most impressive defensive midfielders of recent times,Makalele, was a mere 5'7''.

Kante,a current lynchpin for Leicester,is 5'6''

c'mon,seriously??

You can see why on the face of it it could seem like an issue though. Naturally, a taller player is going to seem more than a smaller-than-average player. Yes there are exceptions, but you can see why people would height might be an issue.

In surprised Byrne didn't get a call up to the latest Irish squad - Chris Forrester who signed for Peterborough in the summer from my local club St Pats did. Forrester was playing as a winger over here but is apparently playing as a deep lying playmaker for Peterborough so in the same spot Byrne would be hoping to occupy. Not much chance of Byrne making it to the Euro's now unless he makes some serious waves over the next month or two

Scored again today...

Just scored another beauty.

THIS is the kinda thing he needs to be doing to really mark himself out as an excellent prospect. Hugely encouraging cos he definitely has this to his game as I've seen it in the EDS and if he can take it into the professional game he's gonna be a VERY useful player...

Lovely strike that.

His one last week wasn't bad either...

Just realised that strike is basically identical to Sergio's second ever goal for us. The long range strike v Swansea.

He is going to be training with the Irish squad. MON basically said as much. I think the Under 21s has a competitive game against Italy which Byrne will play in and he will be in the big squad. The likes of Forrester wont make the final cut so Byrne is ahead of him. I think the move out to Cambuur has worked for Jack. I hope if he isnt in the plans another year in Dutch football will make him a even better player. A move to a bigger club there will help him to play with better players. I am guessing there will a lot of clubs from there looking at getting Jack next season whats that 3 or 4 goals this season not too bad for your first full season.

I hadn't realised that. Maybe I was jumping the gun thinking Forrester was being preferred to him

No to be honest look at that squad and I think Jack could easy break into the squad and team. IF Hendrick is playing regular you have to think Jack could do the same. If Jack was at any championship club who knows by now he may have won a cap by now. Dont know why MON isnt looking far away for players as in England we dont have many playing week in and week out in the premier league and top league football in Holland or France you would think would be of better standard than the championship and league 1.

Called up to the Ireland senior squad for the first time today.

It's just training unfortunately. He isn't going to be in the squad for either of the friendlies, hes going back to the U-21s for their games.

ohhh....well that's a kick in the bollocks....but I guess at least the recognition is there and ive no doubt he will create an impression during that training.
