Height really isn't as important as the way you put yourself about. Navas is short, but he's very good in the air, Sterling is tiny, but he's strong enough and has the attitude to shove players much bigger off the ball.
In the modern game, with today's refereeing, physicality is less important. You want to have some tall lads at the back because set pieces will be an issue, but for a central midfielder there's no problem with being small.
Denis Wise was a midget and held his own in the middle for years.
I'd doubt if Roy Keane (split) was much taller than Byrne. Was he?
You can see why on the face of it it could seem like an issue though. Naturally, a taller player is going to seem more than a smaller-than-average player. Yes there are exceptions, but you can see why people would height might be an issue.Exactly.....what a ridiculous argument.......probably one of the most impressive defensive midfielders of recent times,Makalele, was a mere 5'7''.
Kante,a current lynchpin for Leicester,is 5'6''
c'mon,seriously??
In surprised Byrne didn't get a call up to the latest Irish squad - Chris Forrester who signed for Peterborough in the summer from my local club St Pats did. Forrester was playing as a winger over here but is apparently playing as a deep lying playmaker for Peterborough so in the same spot Byrne would be hoping to occupy. Not much chance of Byrne making it to the Euro's now unless he makes some serious waves over the next month or two
He is going to be training with the Irish squad. MON basically said as much. I think the Under 21s has a competitive game against Italy which Byrne will play in and he will be in the big squad. The likes of Forrester wont make the final cut so Byrne is ahead of him. I think the move out to Cambuur has worked for Jack. I hope if he isnt in the plans another year in Dutch football will make him a even better player. A move to a bigger club there will help him to play with better players. I am guessing there will a lot of clubs from there looking at getting Jack next season whats that 3 or 4 goals this season not too bad for your first full season.
Brilliant news, the kids, when given their chance......are doing us proud at least.Called up to the Ireland senior squad for the first time today.

The irony being, they could probably doing it here.

ohhh....well that's a kick in the bollocks....but I guess at least the recognition is there and ive no doubt he will create an impression during that training. It's just training unfortunately. He isn't going to be in the squad for either of the friendlies, hes going back to the U-21s for their games.
