guess next season's squad

N

Not a striker, we won't play 2 strikers, we may get a wide goal scoring striker than can play in 3 and fill in for Aguero if Iheanacho is unavailable. I do wonder if Debrune could play in a similar position to Muller at Bayern.

I'd love to see us get a 20 goal a season Navas. Someone like Pep used to have in Pedro or Villa alongside Messi. Sterling will hopefully add goals to his game with age and experience and its suddenly quite a frightening front line with Aguero up the middle.

That's the sort of thing I meant a front 3 of Aguero, Sterling and ???? With Debruyne just behind. That could be70 goals just there.

Projecting his tackling, hustle athletic and passing ability all suggest he'd be a good RB

So let's say next season in the CL we were to play athletico/psg/barca/madrid/bayern, would he do a better job than let's say...an actual left back?

No better a job than say Bernat who started as a winger but now plays LB , or Alaba who started as a midfielder, or Lahm playing at DM even though he started at fullback, or Danny Rose also an attacking midfielder, or Alba, or Marcelo or... wait let me see, are there even any good fullbacks outside of Lahm who even started out as fullbacks?

The point here is that we label, but players play. A good coach can match players qualities to positions they originally deemed unusual.

Matter of fact, our best fullback of the adug era, Zab, was a CM to start his career.

Notice how most of the played on the wing? Most of them also have the ability to play in a different position too. Just because some have transformed to play in a a certain position doesn't mean everyone else can. Emre Can for instance is a shit right back, ashley young, milners a shit centre mid.

Emre Can is not a shit RB, he is an utility player, and I've seen him play multiple role commendably.. And Milner started as a center mid, so if he is shit at it, that supports my point. Ashley young is another who'd be a fantastic fullback if he'd just stick to it.

I'm not suggesting all players can switch, just that switching, especially to fullback has been shown to be the easiest to maneuver. It's no surprise that 65% of the best fullbacks didn't start out as fullbacks.

Imo emre can is a shit rb (obviously not his fault) and ashley young can't even get in the England squad yet you'd have him as a full back?

Had Delph started off as a winger then I might hav agreed with you but imo I don't think he'd do a good job there and we should consider our options carefully considering our fullback position has been a liability for a while now

Won't be massive changes in the first year IMO. I reckon:

Top/WC Young LB
Top/WC Young CM
Quality & experienced older CM
Quality CF
Promotion of some EDS guys/guys on loan
3rd string keeper

Out:

Kolarov
Toure
Demichelis
Wright
Bony
Possibly Fernando

Priorities for me, striker, faster, more athletic midfielder x 2 and a right back, plus poss back up goalie. Outside kelechi and denayer none of the young players are ready to be regular squad members-the step up is huge.

For a variety of reasons,i'm not conviced any of that back 4 will start.Otherwise, with the possible exception of Nasri for Silva, maybe not far wrong.
Pogba staying wide left is an interesting thought. I'd always supposed DeBryune will move wife if Pogba came. Dihno/Gundogan seating, seems a lock.

The back four might start that way, but I'm assuming there would be changescascthe season progresses.

Do Kevin and Pogba not get on?

Im sure you understand that the inability to make the English squad as a winger says little about your ability as a fullback.

As for where Delph started. Truth is we wouldn't know until he is played there. Again I repeat, Zabaleta was a DM/CM before becoming a Marauding RB. Delph is faster, more athletic, and almost as aggressive as Zab in the tackle.

I see it. I know most don't. The only worry for me is his injury history. Performance wise, I think he will lock it down by December.
