John Stones

It's a common tactic used by a lot of our opponents that they will usually close our entire team down quickly apart from one player who they identify as a weak link.

A few times this season I've seen players aggressively press until the ball gets to Mangala and then they're more willing to give him time and hope that he makes a mistake.

This is why having two CBs who are comfortable on the ball is a must for any team hoping to dominate possession. Especially in the last few seasons where high pressing and counter attacks are in fashion.
More and more international coaches are deploying the high press. Klopp and Poch for starters. And both teams will be up for it next season.

We simply can't have skill less CBs. We'd suffer against these team's. Klopp's Gengenpressing is hard enough to deal with even when you have superior players across the board. It sure isn't advisable to handicap yourself with players who are uncomfortable or not confident in possession.

And where exactly is Barkley going to play?

We have De Bruyne for his position.

Another pre season another shit loads of money spent on a CB. His defending is shit, if you think Mangala and Otamendi makes mistakes this guy is just as bad.

Delph left back? Rather have Martin petrov there.
That is because you are thinking of the fullbacks as typical fullbacks. Pep doesn't. I have no idea if Dax is right on this one. The only thing I know is none of us know where any player is going to play next season because Pep still doesn't know and he won't decide until he gets here.

He just knows how Pep works. Who knew Lahm would be one of the best holding mids in the business?
Nah, I wouldn't claim that. I just see an obvious LB in Delph. Pep might choose to bin him. I don't know. But the lack of links to leftbacks and the constant suggestions that Kola is out, tells me someone will get repositioned. The best candidate on our squad is Delph.

He is a lot lke Clichy. He tackles well. Quick off the block. Lots of energy, athletic. Yet he has Better ball skills than any fullback we have. Better crosser of the ball too. You know what just Watch this video:

If you don't see a LB in there, then OK. But every time I watch him, all I see a leftback playing out of position.

It's a bit of a shame no one has pointed it out yet. I trust Pep will see it.

I think you are drunk. His ball skills are pretty terrible, he has no positional sense whatsoever, his tackling is of the charge at them and lunge wildly variety and he looks absolutely awful in the wide areas. I honestly have no idea what you see in him and I think you massively underestimate how hard it is to learn how to defend properly, as you also are doing with Stones. Generally players who change positions and do well are players who are intelligent and think about the game, I don't think that describes Delph at all, he's ill disciplined and just charges around like a dog most of the time.

Angelino is far more likely to be our leftback than Delph and as far as I can tell is better than him at pretty much everything

No no no. Stones looks the part And is good footballer but we need a strong good defender. Sadly he is not that. Mates who are Everton fans are frustrated by him his positional play is not great and he makes stupid mistakes. They all wish they would have cashed in 12 18 months ago.

What is it with city. Money comes in from Abu Dhabi and we give it merseyside. We are like the merseyside special investment fund. Lescott, sterling, Rodwell etc etc etc. There has to be better players than those down the m62 and I have been very impressed with the progress of mangala in the last 3 months.

Why?

Im not drunk. I appreciate you disagree. But I think you are wrong. I saw every minute Angelino played for NYCFC last year, to say he is better than Delph at everything is laughable. And I'll leave it at that.

He might be a good player, but £40m !! no thanks

In all honesty I want to see Denayer back at the club and promoted to the first team than spending a vast sum on stones

I hate to argue with you on this one...but they highlighted part is what you understand about Pep. Most of the responses on here saying its nonsense are based on the fact that Delph is not a LB. Pep won't see that as a problem at all.

I see. My bad. Thought you meant I considered myself a thinker of the Pep caliber. That would be real stupid of me :-)

that 40m figure was from last year.

i can't see everton being able to demand that after the 4 or 5 months stones has currently had.

if stones wants city i think we can get him for 25m.

denayer will be here next season.

pep for me will at times play three at the back like he has done at bayern at times, so 5 central defenders will be needed.

Fair enough, but I have massive doubts...!!
I'm not oblivious to why you do. He looks shit sometimes. Or at least has shit looking moments would be a better way to put it. But we wouldn't look like Everton under Pep I reckon. We'd control possession. We'd play an organized form of defense that requires everyone doing specific things out of possession. Stones will be just fine. O believe :)

I see this a lot as justifications for why we might get a new CB and still keep all of the ones here. But I don't buy it. Even if Pep chooses to go with 3 CBs, it's not guaranteed that all 3 will be CBs by trade. Pep plays everyone anywhere he sees fit. So 1 CB and 2 fullbacks could form the back 3 when he uses that formation ( assuming he does). So the chances of 5 CBs while possible, isn't any greater because Pep might play a 3 CB formation sometimes.

I saw Angelino at NY as well and it was a mess. They were the most disorganised team I've ever seen and it was a terrible introduction to senior football. But the fact still remains that Angelino is technically better than Delph, a far sweeter ball striker, better in the tackle and has intelligent movement off the ball for a fullback with excellent overlapping runs. The only things he's lacking is positional sense and defensive nous (and height), two things Delph has none of either, but Angelino looks to be a bright and eager to learn kid who will improve, Delph does not. I honestly don't see anything that Delph has other than a willingness to run around a lot in a pretty aimless manner. When he played on the left side of midfield against Newcastle he was absolutely abysmal and his defending on the goal didn't exactly scream defender. Maybe you saw him more at Villa and he showed something there, but from what I've seen of him for us I don't see it at all.
