Player Thread: Patrick Roberts

With Pep, I think its as much about personality and wanting to learn as it is about raw natural talent.

Pep will do his homework on the lad and no doubt speak with him and if he thinks he can improve him and make him a part of our future he will be back, make no mistake about it.

Ability to understand instructions, physical strength, workrate, attitude will be the deciders I think. Talent is without question.

Same with Barker if he ever sees him.

Absolutely agree mate.

It so exciting thinking about the next 3 seasons and hopefully beyond with pep as manager of the undoubted pool of talent we have.

Mouth watering.

We can't get him back unless they send him back and they won't be doing that. Seems a bit silly 18 months. Should have been a 6 month loan and then left it up to Pep to decide if he should be sent out again or stay with us.

I think the raw materials are different when it comes to a player comparison.Roberts obviously has a love for the game and a desire to be the best, with Barker, from looking at his body language,i don't even think he enjoys the game.

Maybe Pep can alter that?

We have so many talented kids in the various age groups. I'm hoping the best of the older ones will get a chance to reassert themselves as some were fantastic a year or so ago but seem to have lost a little bit of spark whilst waiting.

But some positions have several contenders, & it could be that it's not necessarly the obvious one who ends up getting the job. Could be Roberts turns out to not have the right stuff & someone like Aaron Nemane, not as clever, starts knocking loads of goals in, runs his balls off & goes up a level sneaks infront. Or Diaz moves out wide. Buckley. Sancho. Barker. They are all different & all have tgeir strengths & weaknesses. I would have added Lopes to that list. Wish Pep could have got hold of him.

But if we don't get a few players out of these we are really unlucky.

They wouldn't have taken him. Pellegrini wouldn't have played him. He wouldn't have wanted to sit on the bench at Barnsley, so he'd be in the EDS, fucking miserable & playing like shit, as he was before he went.

Just posted that imo Roberts looked miserable as fuck in the EDS & was a greedy waste of space. They know they are too good to be still at that level. Special players.

I would be absolutely depressed.

Hope there is still enough left of Barker, for Pep to bring it out.

Celtic wouldn't agree to a 6 month loan, they have stupidly early CL qualifiers to get through at the start of next season and they didn't want to have to struggle to get someone else in with the Euro's on as well.

He might never make it at City.

Doesn't mean he couldn't skin a few players & win us a game or two. Same as a whole bunch of others.

Would never be allowed to under Pellegrini. Sterling is capable of doing it, hell, even Navas did it when he was at Sevilla, Nasri did it at Arsenal etc etc. It's almost forbidden in our team.

Roberts has been absolutely fantastic so far at Celtic.

He could be Player of the Year next season in the SPL.

Watching Celtic and wondering what idiot let him go out on loan for that long. He's looked top drawer today.

bored of saying it but what a fucking stupid decision it was loaning out him and denayer.

If them them and kelechi had got regular game time this season would have been very different. They certainly would have played with a bit of desire unlike quite a few in our squad.

its why football and city are crazy????? loaning out your youth only for the club to spend £millions on so called superstars that don't give a shit after they got there big money deal. for me its easy to sort out just bring back the reserve league and make players play in them with the youth. forget loaning out to championship football they need to be playing with better players and not a level below

reserve league works and keeps the squad of players fit and ready to play for the first team unlike at the moment you have 7 to 8 players not playing a game of football and 5 more that sit on the bench each week it also helps the youth play with better players

Patrick isn't returning to our first team next season, guys. We offered a 6-month loan. Celtic said no -- that there was no point in them developing a player for us, only to have a vacuum in his absence the following season. We said fine, under the circumstances we'll accept a longer loan in favor of them developing a player for us. That was the deal.

I don't love it either, but he wasn't getting first team football under Pellegrini (different subject altogether), and he was wallowing in the EDS without signs of promise. Other loans have gone pear-shaped more often than not, but Celtic have fielded players we've sent them. And we're not going to throw away a fairly tight relationship with a football club to get a 19 y/o footballer back one season early. This is a business, and relationships are cultivated carefully.

Hopefully the kid keeps improving, we get what we wanted out of the deal, and he slots straight in to a promising young side this time next year.

Don't understand the comments. Looks a great decision to send him there rather than some championship side with a manager too scared to play him. Will come back in a years time much wiser having played against much more physical opponents than he will ever encounter in the EDS.
