It was announced that he was being given the number 10 shirt the day before their Italian super cup match at the start of the season. I think it is more likely that the hype died down because he had agreed to stay for the season anyway and the season was just about to start than anything to do with the number 10 shirt. Not to mention that the reports about him supposedly having agreed a pre contract with Barca carried on for some time after that.
