John Stones

Lets see in the euros if he is "good on the ball". To me, he looks like he has been playing football since he was a young kid and therefore doesn't fall over it too much. Nothing special.

I'm only interested in this aspect because I hear it so much. I'm more concerned about his ability to defend...and on that score I have my doubts too.

Really fretting about this season tbh.... but then again I'm a nervous nelly in general.

I suspect he does a lot of things on the ball that other centre backs could do but experience and coaching has taught them not to. Playing more difficult passes and running the ball in to midfield is all well and good until you get it wrong.

Most defenders can't do what he does. They simply don't have the confidence, technique or practice.

That's the one thing about Stones that I like. He has the balls for it. He knows if he makes a mistake it will be costly but he's always trying to find a way to contribute to the attack. Much different than Mangala who just looks to offload the ball anywhere else as soon as he got the ball, as if he's afraid of making any mistake while having the ball.

Can't believe the negativity about Stones, looks & plays like a young Alan Hansen. Last season he was being coached by the fraud Martinez in a crap team I'm not surprised he looked poor at times.

It's no different than Raheem last year, the media say he's shit so everyone listens.
Anyone with half a brain can see John Stones is a superstar in the making and let's face it there is no better coach to help him reach the top, same with Sterling and Kelechi etc.

You don't improve defensively with Martinez in charge. I'll think he'll be great.

He's so calm even after a mistake, which shows his mindset. Compare him to Mangala at say Watford where one mistake just gave him the compusure of jelly.
This is spot on.
Mangala reacts like a poor boxer who's caught by good shot. The good ones cover up and get themselves back in the fight. Mangala tries too hard to put it right and invariably makes another error.
I remember a coach talking about scouting players. He said the real judge of a 'keeper is how they react to a mistake and how they play in the next game after letting in 3 or four.

he's already a very good player. pair him with laporte and we'll be flying. if vinny stays fit enough to compete they we really are going to be very difficult to beat.

The media had nothing to do with Sterling looking shit. We just saw more of him and he was awful most of the time. Let's hope he can improve under Pep but let's not believe the hype about players just because they happen to be English.

I think describing him as awful most of the time is a silly statement, anyone with half a brain can see that a lot of people's frustrations everyone has with Raheem are down to the instructions of Pellegrini.
I saw enough at the start of the season and when ever he plays for England to see he has the ability but as soon as Pelle got his hands on him he just retained possession every time he got the ball rather than take risks, the same happened to Navas.

Totally agree. We lacked leaders and strong mentality last year. I hope the new players including Stones bring this.

Maybe I have less than half a brain but even at the start I was wondering about the hype. I was hoping he'd settle but instead he collapsed. Seems a nice guy and we have a huge amount invested in him so I hope we are happy with him in the end ... but I'm not confident to be honest.
