I think some of the people saying clichy should have done better are missing the point. As soon as I saw it was lukaku vs clichy I knew how it was going to end. Clichy is a very average defender whose only great asset was his pace, which is fading. Lukaku is a beast who is difficult to stop 1v1 even for a good defender. Clichy being clichy was never going to stop him, he simply isn't a good enough defender, he is not capable of 'doing better'. Saying he should have done better is fantasy, it's like wishing for him to suddenly morph into a better player.

De Bruyne and Aguero should have done better because they have the ability and the skill to do better from the penalty spot. Clichy is a very limited player, as soon as he got caught 1v1 with Lukaku in that position the end result was as clear as day.

Clichy is ridiculously overrated on here.....

He's a defender of course he should've done better

They are both as shit as each other. Only one of our full backs is anywhere near the required level and he is 34 in Feb.

Agreed except Sagna is no better either. In fact I think he's another with no pace and very little talent. We are desperate for full backs, in hindsight - even though we didn't win but should've - 3 at the back with Sane and Sterling out wide could be the answer for now. At least in selected games.

Things I can credit Everton on -

1. Some absolutely dogged defending.
2. Clinical finishing. You can't get better than 2 shots 1 goal while we struggled to hit a donkey's arse with a proverbial banjo.

Some cracking football but we will struggle with teams that have pace on the counter until our defence gets a huge overhaul.

Dominated today. Didn't think it would be this one sided. Unfortunately we missed 2 penalties and got a draw, could of been worse.

We need to start taking shots from outside the box more often. Makes us more unpredictable. On a good day we destroy Everton, luck wasn't with us. Sane looks like a genuine prospect. Sterling was dangerous once again. KDB and Silva were class as always.

This is probably our best formation especially because our full backs are far below the required level, would prefer to see them on the bench, they are liabilities every time they play and opponents know this. I'm hoping Kompany can stay fit. A back 3 of Stones-Kompany-Otamendi is mouth watering. Maybe we see this vs Barca??? Today could of been a dress rehearsal.

What was poor by him was he didn't try and do a dive block maybe because he is left footed.

Agree with that. When I said anywhere near, that's what I was getting at too.

Kompany in for Clichy with Stones on the right of a back 3 and we may have something.

It's criminal our oversight in these areas. peps sides have all had good full backs.

The whole match against those bus parking teams - and of course Everton have been exactly this today - is about taking the lead.
If you miss 2 penalties you simply don't deserve to win. Yep, still gutted...

Nice dominace and possession - outside the box.
The game inside the box has been poor. Nobody knew where to pass or where to go. No plan at all. Didn't like that very much.

Shots from outside are difficult as you don't have much time against such a defense. Another plan needed there.

Corners can also be executed by a short kick to keep possession. What was the plan there?? Come on Pep!

I wonder if possession teams like City or Low's German team should drop deep every now and then to pull the opponent team higher up the pitch in order to move into open space with pace.
If Pep says he cannot play in a different way he is wrong. He HAS to develop alternatives as the opponents are doing quite well in managing our style.
There is a lot of work to do and we need much more creativity and maybe some unconventional approaches as well.

Disappointed with the result obviously, but not disappointed with the performance.
Though we played some fantastic football and definitely deserved to win but unfortunately we didn't score either of the penalties.
How the fuck that awful tackle on Sterling wasn't deemed to be a foul when it was probably a red card with most other refs.
Sane looked dangerous in the 1st half and it should have been a penalty when he was brought down in the area.
Sterling looks a different player from last season and is full of confidence.
No need to panic in my opinion.
If we keep playing the way we are then we will definitely win more often than not.

The boss seems to agree with me..are you talking the p...?

Slow as well it seems..... That's called being 'complementary' to a man he has been close to for 25 years, hence he states they had '1 chance' and we created 'many many chances'... But well done to Everton who contributed long ball after long ball to Lukaku and created one chance...

Yes it is.

It's not clichys fault that he is a limited player, he is what he is and when you see his name in the side you know what you are going to get. Sagna and Clichy both put in a decent shift in terms of work rate which you have to appreciate when you see the way Kolarov ambles around but neither of them are ever going to play like world beaters. Kolarov has the odd world beating game in his closet but too often he just doesn't turn up. The real problem is that we have 4 players who would make 'OK' 2nd choice full backs and none that really good enough to be first choice in the kind of team we aspire to be.

Sure the club are well aware of the full back issues and that is where we will improve next. Was always going to be hard to get Sagna off the books with his wage and same for kolarov and clichy.

You cant blow 2 penalties and still win games and today was unfortunately just one of those days.

That said, i thought we played some wonderful football and but for a worldy of a save to deny Kev we would have still got the win.

Credit to Everton who defended superbly as well.

Great game to watch.

Pretty much this

I thought we played very well and on another day we'd have thrashed Everton. You miss two pens then you will struggle to win. Only problem was that we didn't turn the total domination we had into more opportunities. Everton were very very defensive. They didn't press us. They just funnelled back and retreated to the penalty area and defended their box. They were well organised but only showed one moment of quality in the game. It was just one of those days.

They had about 3 attacks of note and scored with one. An absolutely brilliant goal from Lukaku who was otherwise anonymous.

I thought Sane and KDB were very good.
