With the return of Kompany are we going to see a back 3 of Kompany Stone and Otamendi? Or was Everton a one off?

I think if Vinny can regain form we will destroy the Premiership with a 3 man defence of Kompany, Otamendi and Stones. It will allow us to play with an extra man in midfield / the forward line.

Didn't get the result against Everton, but it will take time, and Vinny didn't start. I don't think Lukaku would have scored had he been one on one with Kompany.

Vinnie up front reminded me of David James. In fact I think pep had a cuddley toy as a good luck charm by the dugout ygesterday.

vGaal tactics - stick all tall Belgian up front for long balls, just needs to work on his elbows.

Said exactly that yesterday

Felt sorry for Clichy yesterday as if stones hadn't dived in on the half way line and if we hadn't loss the ball to allow the long ball out stones clichy wouldn't have been isolated against one of the quickest most powerful strikers in the prem. He really didnt have a chance. .........put Kompany Stones or Otttomendi there and at least one of those would have the strength to get closer to him...if clichy gets close he just gets nudged out of the way. I thought clichy had a reasonable game yesterday but he had little chance one on one with Lukaku.

We're going to see all sorts of different shapes and systems this season, mate. Guardiola is the polar opposite of Pellegrini. He picks a team specifically designed to stop the opposition and counter theor weaknesses.

After the Sunderland game the MOTD pundits got all excited at the inverted full back thing and assumed we're going to play it all season, but we've barely done it since.

The 3 at the back today I assume he did so we could get an extra man in central midfield to stop their counter attacks through the middle and to swamp Barry so he couldn't dictate play for them.

Whatever the reason, you'd have to say the game plan was sound as we had 70% possession, about 20 shots on goal, missed two penalties and their keeper made 2 of the best saves you're ever likely to see. It was just one of those days.

I'm sure we'll play 3 at the back again this season, but "Moving to 3 at the back then?" for the rest of the season? I don't think we will, no.

No problem with the back 3, but we need better than Clichy in there.

Stones, Otamendi, Kompany, Kolarov and Sagna should be the options when playing a back 3. Clichy or Zabaleta not strong enough to play that role.

If Marvin if.

If Vinny can hopefully get over his perennial like injury woes to become the regular rock for us he once was, we may have the options you mention. Until then, we hold our breath and hope Vin can get back to his former self by staying on the pitch and seeing out games injury free.

Think it is something we will see a few times during the season but not a regular formation

In my interview with Marti Perarnau recently he said to me that we'd see a different kind of City after this international break just gone and that was quite clear from the moment the team was announced yesterday. The first part of the season wasn't so much about tactics as about the players understanding the basics of what a Pep team is (press, work hard, follow instructions, etc). We saw yesterday a huge tactical shift in terms of playing without full backs and also playing with so many attacking players. Personally I thought our build up and control particularly in the first half was truly exceptional. You could see that Koeman had little idea about what he could do and was just sat there hoping we didn't score.

Certainly I can see with our weakness at full back an argument to play that kind of 3222 formation as often as possible.

fully agree

will be interesting to see if a fullback or two become transfer targets.......or just players who have the attributes to play there. I think everyone agrees that Ferna can do this role within the set up pep wants (interesting that news is coming out that he will be offered a 2 year extension to his contract..while lots of others aren't).
If Kompany wasn't such an injury worry I think we would have seen it already. I hope to god that it works out for Kompany but i do think we need to be looking for his replacement as well just in case. If he can regain his prime then a back 3 with him in it will be very hard to beat as all of them one on one are very strong (him Ottomendi and Stones) and this is what Pep requires but you can see with the current squad of other defenders.....zabba and Kolorov esp that one on one they re extremely vulnerable....clichy as well and even Sagna (who i do rate)

It also enables us to give Kun even more support and with G.Jesus coming in our forward line could mirror that of barca a little (you cant replicate messi its just not possible) but GJ Sterling Sane all give us players with one on one ability to

Pep will have the opposition manager second guessing until the final game of the season.

I thought Clichy was outstanding yesterday and couldn't do a lot about the goal

He did do really well overall and quite frankly Stones has gotten off lightly considering what a big fuck up it was from him that led to the goal. Having said that i felt Clichy could've done a bit better than giving Lukaku so much room on his stronger foot!

Yeh maybe. Lukaku is a beast though. Just think he was too strong for Clichy

Yeah defo, it's possible he gets tight and tries to show him on his right and he just gets shouldered off the ball anyway. Probably the one risk you have when you play a fly weight full back in a back three is that he gets isolated against a strong quick forward.

Its fine having the opposition manager guessing, but some of our players seem unsure as well, and that's not great.

I thought he did OK too, in fact probably the best of the 3, because he concentrated on defending, when playing 3 at the back though, you need specialised 3 at the back players, and at the moment we don't have them, I really hope he doesn't try it again on Wednesday, and use Kolarov as one of the three.
