New runway at heathrow

Just looked on a map and the line runs about a mile to the east of the airport. What a ridiculous waste of an opportunity to finally start integrating the country's transport infrastructure.
Bod said the same on 5livr debate this morning. The reposte from the Southerner. "Birmingham doesn't warrant it as there's only 16 million passengers go through it a year"

Surely building the new runway there would treble that easily? As you say the transport infrastructure is there for fast getaways.

The irony being that it's southerners that have held it up for so long. There's loads of space around Birmingham Airport and good existing transport links even before HS2.They could create a massive airport that serves the whole country if they really wanted to, but I guess that would mean diverting money and jobs away from London. And we obviously can't be having that.

They will have to face facts sometime - its gonna be in someone's back yard eventually !! As I posted earlier lawyers and consultants are the big winners today...... expanding Brum and integrating with HS2 is the obvious and sensible move - but you're talking about UK transport infrastructure planning here so it all has to start, stop and go through London

Not that I'm pro Birmingham or anything but it would be ideal, for us in the North as well, mind you they didn't build the new national stadium there neither so basically if it ain't in London it doesn't matter as per usual

They can put the new runway where they like as far as I am concerned, as long as it pisses off that stupid twat from "Plane Stupid" who was on the radio this morning then I'll be delighted.

There was a posh bloke on BBC News this morning saying he has to walk around his wearing noise cancelling headphones all the time even though he lives miles from Heathrow, cracked me up so im all for it as long as it makes more noise above his house.

But why just one new runway? Surely if you're looking to future-proof it then you really need two. One for take off and one for landing.
The new runway looks shorter than the existing ones. That would suggest that it will be used more for smaller aircraft, freeing up the existing runways for bigger long haul aircraft from more destinations.

See some silly MP has resigned over it. Tit.

Lets face it, if you want to fly to London you don't fly to Birmingham and you certainly won't be paying £25+ for a train to London as well no matter how fast it is. At no point have I wanted to fly to Los Angeles and flown to San Francisco and then jumped on a train, the same goes for any other major city in the world. Nice has a good train link with Paris but you wouldn't fly there and then jump on the train if you wanted to go to Paris.

The only clear choice is to build a new runway, it is the cheapest choice and really the only one that makes logical sense. Anyone saying otherwise is missing the fact that it is the largest airport in Europe operating at 99% capacity, it is just a total no brainer.

The Americans usually have it right on things like this, they just build 4+ runways and get it sorted. We are the only ones who can hold up major infrastructure builds because of the effect on birds or a load of stupid idiots who decided it was a good idea to move next to an airport and complain about noise.

Depends on travel time and cost. When I lived in Leeds it was most time and cost effective to get a bus to Leeds Bradford airport, fly to Dusseldorf and get a train to Cologne than to get anywhere that flew directly to Cologne.

However, train times and cost are a huge problem in this country. I disagree with HS2 but it should help the former. Can't imagine it'll be cheap to ride though.
