On the contrary, I thought it was his " performances on the pitch " which are doing that .

His performances on the pitch don't affect his automatic selection for England. They aren't allowed to - (it's the law) so off-field stuff has to be brought into consideration and even then I expect the new England manager to suck the Shrek's cock as soon as he's appointed.
As for his club stuff; even the rags realise he's bleeding them for £300k per week and giving little in return. But they can't go public as that will affect his price assuming anybody is daft enough to consider him.
