Donald Trump

Because they're Republicans and were always going to vote for him or whoever else got the nomination.
Because they were Republicans and, although they didn't like Trump, weren't prepared to vote for anyone else.
Because they were prepared or wanted to believe his promises.
Because he wasn't Hillary Clinton.

The interesting thing, having been over there just a few days before the election, was that the first thing anyone asked was "What about Brexit?" I explained that people voted to leave the EU for all sorts of reasons but the one thing that caused many of them to do so was that they were fed up with the political elite telling them what was good for them but consistently failing to deliver what they wanted. And that's the same reason many voted for Trump.

Sorry, especially as insulting your friends, but as an argument for "not all trump voter are thick" I don't think any of those qualify.

Choosing Trump just because he's got the republican nomination is stupid. He's a racist, sexist, narcissist who boasts about sexual assault, insults war veterans and lies through his teeth about everything that suits him, seems intent on ruining the environment, and has admitted that his biggest policy - mexico paying for the wall - was just something he repeated because the crowd at a rally loved it.

Being so engrossed in party politics that you vote in Trump - especially when the Republicans already control the House and senate - because you can't tolerate the alternative is cutting off your nose to spite your face, and it makes you an idiot.

And so does believing the promises of a man who's a compulsive liar and has been proven to be so.

I'm not saying that everyone who voted for trump was an idiot, but those reasons, they're incredibly stupid.

It's called democracy. Sorry if you don't like it.

Not sure what that comment is even supposed to mean. I never said they shouldn't be able to vote for whoever they wanted, I asked what these "not thick" Trump voters reasons were and all you gave were stupid reasons to vote for Trump.

I mean christ "they believed his promises" - no one with any sense would believe his promises, he breaks them as soon as he makes them, he lies about twice a minute whenever he's on stage and he ignores facts and invents his own reality.

Believing promises from someone like that qualifies you as "thick" or whatever the phrasing was.

It's awful that I'm agreeing with you :)

Genuine question - what in particular has he done that is making everyone say he is not honest?

Here's an extract for those that can't be arsed to click on the link:

Yet even jaded connoisseurs of Oval Office dissembling were astonished over the last week by the torrent of bogus claims that gushed from President Trump during his first days in office.

“We’ve never seen anything this bizarre in our lifetimes
, where up is down and down is up and everything is in question and nothing is real,” said Charles Lewis, the founder of the Center for Public Integrity and the author of “935 Lies: The Future of Truth and the Decline of America’s Moral Integrity,” a book about presidential deception.

The point is that people can vote for whichever candidate they want and don't have to give a valid reason as to why they did vote the way they did. You may have a view, I may have a view (and I generally agree with yours btw) but unless you've got a PR system and a wider choice of candidates people have to vote for someone who may not be ideal.

Trump sets lobbying bans. I'm sure you'll all tell me why this is actually terrible.
This is great news if it happens, but you're right, I am trying to think of ways that this personally benefits Trump, because I'm sensible enough not to trust a pathological liar. Although let's be honest, now he's the president and his kids are running his company on his behalf (but not telling him anything, honest), there's no harm in banning every other company from lobbying. After all, the first thing most dictators do when they get into power is systematically remove any threats to that power, and politicians backed by big business who can overrule him are a big threat. But I hope he's doing it because it will benefit American politics as a whole.

I don't know how many voted but I seem to remember 40 odd million voted for him. Are they all thick?
Out of curiosity - and if it were a case of one or the other - would you say that Trump is someone who is genuinely empowering or someone who is more concerned with an image of power? And would you agree that the latter is more likely to be unstable/unbalanced than the former?

It's not a terrible idea . . . too bad Obama thought of it first. You'll probably think it's terrible now.

Oh, and the court system overturned parts of it. Obama also banned lobbyists from his transition team. Unlike Trump; Pence had to clean up that mess.

Yes. Not even a doubt in my mind.

Look at the Democrats tearing themselves apart. The people running for the party leadership entrenching themselves in race politics saying things like 'we don't need white people leading this party'. No self reflection as to why they lost and the disenfranchisment felt by the working class family with the Democrats, they are imploding like Labour. It's all because 'muh racists and sexists'.

Like 2016 it won't even be close.

Your lack of understanding about America is shocking. You have no idea what the backlash is like here. None.
