Yeah, there were huge problems in December with postal tests and loads of people jetting off to the Canaries.
Seems some companies simply weren't ready or prepared and lots of people just didn't get their results back in time and ended up missing flights and losing holidays.

I don't think any company or clinic can 100% cast iron guarantee the results within a certain timeframe, but I'd certainly fancy my chances more with a clinic than with a postal test. I've not heard any clinic based horror stories (though I'm sure there are some) but I've read plenty of postal based test horror stories.

Most clinics will say if you have your test done by a certain time, then you'll get the results either the same day or the next day (depending on which service you have booked)

This is the one mentioned operating out of Hilton at Manchester airport, and also out of the Jurys Inn in the centre, offering various options. Pretty representative of most clinics up and down the country I'd say, in terms of time turnaround and price.

Thanks for that. I checked out that one you mentioned. Looks a decent set up and would be ideal as I could just nip into Jurys in town on the Thursday, get the same day test done in advance of my Friday morning flight, and it would also do me for the return flight on the Sunday too. Then I checked Trustpilot and the latest review from today was from someone whose mum did it at Kings Cross and she didn’t get the result back in time for her flight! I’m guessing this is just an exception rather than the norm but it shows nothing is guaranteed

Hi Tonster just read the guidance you attached and it says you cannot take an nhs abroad with you to self test for your return journey (or words to that affect). Was going to do that with self test kits we have for the kids but think i will play safe and get one done in Portugal.

Yeah I’ve changed my mind on that. I think it would be ok to be honest but don’t want to chance it. How closely will someone in Portugal even know what sort of test? Anyhow going to do in clinic test Thursday, fly Friday, return Sunday will use outbound test on return

As an aside, it’s sensible to take the NHS antigen tests with you anyhow and do one before taking the ‘paid’ test as a bit of confidence. I’ll be doing that before any PCR tests. It’s what airlines do for crew before flying to anywhere they’re going to get PCR tested so that they have confidence they won’t ‘fail’ the PCR and end up stuck somewhere. If you are negative on one of the NHS tests, you can be confident you’ll be negative on any PCR / antigen test you have to pay for within the next few hours!

At this point Anna broke down and told me she was having problems with her flatmate who was bringing her boyfriend (the flatmate’s not Anna’s, she never had one as far as I’m aware) back to the flat and their nocturnal activity was keeping her awake all night. We both concluded that her lack of sleep was the real problem and no more was ever said about the racism issue.

Its so confusing and the more I read the more confusing it gets. Booked cheap flights and hotel on Tuesday so not going to cut corners on tests. Like you were booking tests in Didsbury for Monday, fly out Weds, will arrange test prob friday in Porto, fly home Sunday and book a local boots test for the Tuesday.

One of our kids currently has covid, were on day nine of isolating, and were self testing every 3 days as a precaution. He has no symptoms and was picked up by one of the self testing kits initially. Been crapping it all week in case I test positive cos that will scupper all plans. Weve read there is no point testing him again for 90 days, unless he has symptoms, as he could still produce a positive test. So a positive test now would mean no travel. Really feel like continuing isolation until my test a week on Monday to be safe cos would be gutted to miss this trip. :)
