EFL play-offs could move from 4 teams to 6

It actually wouldn't surprise me if that was put on the table at some stage; top 6 Premier League teams go into a playoff, top 4 in the semi's, 5th and 6th in a quarter final, with a final at Wembley to decide who the Premier League winner is, similar to what they have in some other leagues. Some kind of mad cap idea to make it more competitive and unpredictable.

Probably will be played in America

It is.

The EFL want that but refuse the National league having 3 up 3 down to league 2.

It's as if they trying to protect themselves....

Just had a read of the article. For some reason I can’t click on the link to go directly.

It’s not quite the same. 3rd and 4th placed teams would see no difference. They’d play a 2 legged semi and the final if they made it.

5th-8th placed teams would play a one off tie with the 5th and 6th placed teams at home.

Then they play it out like it is now.

If it’s to stop dead rubbers, why don’t they do it for relegation too?

I believe it's similar. Do they have the promotion place versus the last relegation place somewhere in Jock fitba?
We used to have that, didn’t we? I think you’re right though, they do have relegation playoffs oop there.

Perhaps the playoff winner could thrn have a playoff with the relegated team too.

Keep the season going until July.

Ok, let's have a top 10 play off !

Where do you stop with the greed ?
Listened to Keith Hill a couple of weeks ago on Radio Manchester discussing the proposal. He said the same thing, where will it stop - what will be next the top 22

The play-offs were introduced to give "more meaning" to end of season games for teams who were likely to miss out on promotion. This would lead to more fans through the turnstiles.
And it's true, but I'd sooner we got back to having real supporters of teams turning up rather than those who want to see a game that might lead to a play-off place.
The play-offs are a nonsense, and remember we finished third in 98-99 so would have been promoted without the play-offs.

Please, it is. I don't even agree with 6th, but if you push to 8th then why not 10th.
I think we're actually coming from the same place here

6th is the problem. 8th is marginally worse but once we all accepted that a team finishing 6th could be promoted, then it doesn't really matter if it's 6th, 8th or 10th. The meritocracy of the league format has already been tossed aside

It's exactly how they have it in the Aussie Rugby league and Aussie Rules over here, however the playoffs (or finals as they are called) are to win the competition, not for promotion to a higher division.

In the Aussie rules, the Brisbane Lions, won the whole thing after finishing 5th in the league standings, but won multiple games in the finals series and took out the title.

It adds excitement I guess but will never sit right with me.

We may as well scrape the leagues and just call all leagues the play off finals and play till the chosen clubs finish top at this rate, it’s fucked

So in our centurions season - where we finished 19 ahead of 2nd - 6th place gooners could in theory win the league, after finishing THIRTY SEVEN points behind the 'winners'.....

I think the playoffs have been great tbh i bet you any money that money generated since there introduction outweighs what would hsve been without them.
Your lot would have gone straight up in 99 but would that have been a thing of folklore compared to what really happened ?????

As for points gaps and it not being fare they all know the rules,York owner last season saying it wasnt fair that the gap between them and the others was massive ............a fair point untill you look back and the last two promotions for York was achieved finishing in 6th place ............you cant have it both ways can you.
