Maine Road - before it was, er, Maine Road....

The problem with the Maine Law theory is that it's based entirely on an anonymous quote of unknown origin. There are other reasons to be sceptical. Firstly, no-one has found an example of the Maine Law being commemorated in this way anywhere else in the UK during the period. That's probably...

New Book "Who said City couldn't play!"

I've just finished reading this book and am impressed by how much I've learned about the period. The author has adopted a similar approach to Paul Toovey in that he has amassed a huge amount of primary source material and arranged it in chronological order. To put his work into perspective, only...

    1884 or 1894 ?

I'm the author of A Man's Game: the Origins of Manchester City FC. In my first week as a history student, back in the 1980s, a history professor told me: “Ignore other people's conclusions. The only thing that matters is the evidence”. That is great advice for anyone who wants to write about...

    Rags owe us £3.3billion (probably)

I agree, a lot more hard evidence is needed on this particular matter and I'm fascinated in what you've found. However, the chance of winding up United fans on the eve of a derby proved irresistible. I'll reply to your pm later when I get the chance.

    Rags owe us £3.3billion (probably)

Actually, I received an email today in which an elderly City fan who grew up in Moss Side confirms just this. Ardwick AFC, Loved that interview

    Rags owe us £3.3billion (probably)

The immediate post-war period is one of huge significance for both clubs - and one that changed the balance of power in Manchester football. As well as the matter of rent, there was also a significant drift in support from City to United. City were also falling behind in other areas, such as...

A new website about City's history

I'll ask around, though I sure someone on here must know him. Thanks for all the positive comments about the site. The first photo gallery will be going online tomorrow, and I'll be adding one a week for the foreseeable future.

A new website about City's history

That's a real shame about MCFC Stats. It was still online a couple of weeks ago but hadn't been updated since 2009 when its owner died. Hope someone has backed up all that info. Trevor, I've always enjoyed reading City Til I Die (and put a link to it on my site). Gary, I think the sooner a...

A new website about City's history

That would be fantastic. I wrote a piece about the Maine Road ghost a few years ago. He was called "Fred" apparently. http://www.webarchive.org.uk/wayback/archive/20081201164437/http://www.purelymancity.com/index.php/features/was-maine-road-haunted/

A new website about City's history

That's a great story. Would it be possible to put a photo of her on the site? She attracted some attention in the comments section of the piece and it would be great to finally show who she was.

A new website about City's history

Actually, I'm planning to run a story about Russell. There's another clipping from the same newspaper from the following year that details his off-the-field activities whilst playing for Forest: I'm not entirely sure, but I think "the twins" might be a reference to his testicles.

A new website about City's history

A City Historical Society is a great idea. And good luck with the next "Big Book Of City" - I'm looking forward to reading it.

-- Tue Sep 27, 2011 9:33 am --

Not sure. I toyed around with a few points systems, but it was mainly to ensure that United didn't finish top.

A new website about City's history

That's a great find. Wonder if the club managed to acquire it as I know they've been making efforts to buy old memorabilia.

A new website about City's history

My starting point was to look at where else that symbol would have been in use. I've been surprised at how recognisable it would have been back then (I've found a picture of a Manchester ginger beer bottle from that period with a virtually identical cross). I doubt we'll ever be sure about its...

A new website about City's history

You're right. Just checked my notes and Charles was indeed a distant relation of Alfred. I've now amended the article. Right, now I really have to get back to work.

A new website about City's history

Prestwich, Dreyfus was actually the leader of the Manchester Zionist movement, which was probably the most powerful Zionist group of the time. He also employed a chemist at the Clayton Aniline called Chaim Weizmann, who later became the first President of Israel. The link between City, Balfour...

A new website about City's history

Yeah, I know what you mean but I'm pretty sure that's possible on the platform I'm using. I'll look into though, as I would prefer links to come up in a separate window.

A new website about City's history

Interesting, so it's a two-pronged attack on the official spokesman for Liverpool FC / Scottish managers then? My piece will be about some financial dealings of his from the 1990s that he'd probably want to be forgotten.

A new website about City's history

Silvercloud, Good point. I should point out that I'm quite lazy, so it's really more like 4 years' research spread out over 6. Didsbury Dave, Book's coming out next month. Prestwich_Blue, Well, I'm going to write a piece next week, prompted by Saturday's disgraceful MOTD, that should very much...
