£50m bid

This could be one of those unstoppable force vs. immovable object moments that the internet sometimes provides, but you know what FantasyIreland is saying as a possibility, right? It's an agreement of £50m for Sterling between clubs 3 months ago, with a calendar of face-saving.

City: How much for Sterling?
Pool: £50m and not a penny less.
City: Sure, we think he's worth it. We'll take him.
Pool: Right, okay... we need to look like we absolutely didn't want to sell and put up a big fight though.
City: That's fine, we don't want other clubs to think we'll just run in and pay full price without a fight anyway.
Pool: Also would help us if we found a replacement without other clubs knowing we had £40m burning a hole in our pockets.
City: Unterstand. What do you say to 3 rounds of bidding? Maybe we start at £25m + 5m mid-June?
Pool: Sounds about right, maybe aim to conclude by July 1st.
City: Perfect, we'll talk in June.

Now I'm not saying I subscribe to the fact that that kind of coordination exists, certainly not in that simplified example, but it wouldn't surprise me. And it's an example, as FantasyIreland stated, of a £50m bid for Sterling being placed and accepted three months ago, with a lot of pageantry to follow. That's all.

What a load of fucking bullshit.

What a load of fucking bullshit.

A) Didn't say I believed it, and explicitly said that it was an idealized version of what a conversation might be, just to demonstrate a point. The point being that clubs might have a little coordination in how a sale takes place, rather than the simplistic idea that we send them a fax with a number on it and they respond with a yes or a no. I think those days are probably long gone.

B) These things are -- at least on some occasions -- tied up well before anyone in the media or public get involved or hears about it. I had a co-worker who was involved in Soccer Aid 2014 last summer. He saw Mourinho and asked if Fabregas was coming to Chelsea, as media outlets we're starting to report. Mourinho laughed and replied that they'd completed a deal for him three months prior. The whole thing had been done and dusted.

Again, not saying what I posted was in any way representative of real life. Just trying to help someone on the forum explain their point by hyperbole: which is that if we're making a very large purchase of a player there's a chance it was either done, or not done, a very long time ago. A lot of what happens after that agreement can be better explained by someone who knows more than I do, but I certainly don't think it's out of the question to suggest that part of it can be attributed to the clubs making the most agreeable arrangements possible for everyone involved.

Hi pudge, Has Tolmie posted since all the issues? I read he would still post on a thread if he had heard anything.....with Sterling coming back earlier from Holiday and rumours of a 3rd bid......was hoping Tolmie might jump on with a bit of news.....
With some of the stupidity & childish comments on here no wonder genuine folk with some knowledge decide to keep it to themselves
