£80 fine for not registering.

As a "jobsworth" who goes round visiting people who haven't registered to vote, a few things...
We live in a democratic country. That doesn't just happen magically. Registering to vote is a small price to pay, I would say. Makes no sense to me that people don't want to.vote, especially when there are so many countries in the world where people are crying out for democracy and their right to vote.
The Representation of the People Act says eligible people need to register but nowhere does it say they have to vote.
I suspect that many of those who complain about having to register would be the first ones all over social media complaining if they were stripped of that right.
The info is used by other govt departments, which is made perfectly clear at the declaration stage, such as the MoJ to select people for jury service.
Local councils also need to know how many residents they've got; the info is used in setting the settlement figure from the govt. So you can't really complain about having to be on the Register AND having insufficient services.
Banks and financial institutions use the info too. Your credit rating probably won't be too high if you're not on the Register. Political parties also use it.
But the info can also be bought by anybody, unless you opt out of the Open Register.
Beyond the usual Council/democracy-bashing, I'm puzzled as to why anyone would have a beef TBH. If you don't vote you haven't got a voice.
