£80 fine for not registering.

£80 doesn't pay for the costs of sending people round to check why no-one's registered.
Where we lived a council official always came to collect the electoral forms, he was paid to enforce the law.
I tried every trick to avoid but he came back and read the riot act he had checked and we hadn’t filled the form in.
Stood at the door until it was completed “threatening behaviour” we moved away and now always fill the form in, no one comes round knocking on the door.

You can register to vote but not vote.
However if you don’t register to vote how will they know to collect your rubbish or how many people live in the area for bus service provision, doctors surgeries, dentists, help for the disabled and elderly, plus schools etc?

I don’t understand what you have to hide? Why not register to vote? Am I missing something. I just re-register online every year when the letter drops through my letter box. No one knocks on my door and haven’t done since well before Covid.
It takes two minutes to fill in the form and that’s it for another year.

If your details haven't changed from the previous year you don't need to do anything at all.

That is outrageous that they can sell your data
They're selling just your name and address. That's public, and helps to protect electoral fraud. It might in the past have brought in a bit of junk mail but less so now.

Most people wanted their landline to be in the telephone directory, they didn't go ex-directory. Anyone could buy a directory with names, addresses and phone numbers.

It's more suspicious to live in a house where no-one is on the register.

What is this about ? I am registered to vote but didn’t think you had to as it’s often mentioned when applying for mortgage and I never registered when I was living elsewhere
