“Block” feature

Now that we’ve upgraded the forum software, there are more options available in terms of add-ons. One that has been suggested is an extension of the ignore function, which essentially makes it like the Twitter block feature (i.e. you can’t see their posts, and they can’t see yours). Part of me thinks this could be a solution to the problems we face in the Political Forum particularly. Might stop a lot of the silly arguments that plague these threads, but stop them being pulled and allow more sensible discussion to thrive amongst those willing to do so. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I think people should be adults and deal with grown folk like grown folk are supposed to.

All you have to do is not engage with them or don't respond.

It's the impulse to argue that gets shit out of control.

I had my differences with Banjani, but we sorted it even if we don't always agree. Have the same with certain other members, but I'm still willing to engage or ignore without actually pushing a button.

Time adults were adults.

Communicating over text and not being present is always more tricky to manage a conversation politely, even with people you know.

There’s far more arguments and abuse in my friend group chats than when everyone is sat round a pint and there’s no platform online that matches the restraint people show in arguing face to face.

This will help and there’s about 3/4 going straight on to block when I work out how to do it.

I don't really see the point, the new ignore function lets you see someone who's ignored has posted but you choose to open it. Blocking will just become an echo chamber of people posting past each other. Ignore hides people's posts so for me the arguments and bickering are people looking for an argument anyway. Something like me and Bob on politics is us just not agreeing, so I don't know where you're drawing the line.

To me the only point is instead of banning people, mods put the blocks in between certain posters as a step between warnings and bans. Like I say, people looking for a squabble will find it so to me it should be a moderating tool and nothing more.

Isn't that the bit where you're supposed to ask the context of the post was, in order to understand the tone and intention, especially as most of the time, these are strangers we converse with?

We should have a bluemoon fight club to iron out any differences once a month. Who wants to meet up at the fucking Rain Bar or Shambles Square and have a pint with some of the bores on here whose most entertaining contribution to the forum is on the muffin or barm thread. Give me a week's notice and I'll book out the gym at Moston Lads Club and we can sort out whether Dawn Butler was telling the truth once and for all.
