“City in crisis”

I was ok before reading this.

Anyone got a spare length of rope I can borrow?
Sorry to be a Debbie-downer.

Thing is, every team eventually undergoes decline. But great sides rise up from the floor when beaten down.

This season, we're shit and won't win anything - I think we'll qualify for the C/L but who knows? - maybe not. The stupid FFP charges against us might well compound matters for seasons following. But so long as we have Pep and the backing of our owners, we'll rebuild and become great - and possibly even better than before.

For example, that Barca side of 2011 is the best ever squad in professional football, IMO. They fell off big time - but in spite of major financial problems - they've rebuilt.

It's not a "crisis", it's a problem and it will be sorted out. I think at the moment it's a mentality issue and a lack of confidence and conversely a loss of fear in our opponents. The Anfield game is huge but the season has a long way to go before it's over. To still be in second place after such a poor run is to our advantage in the long run. We may well not be Champions again this year but I believe we'll be around for the run in.

Ours issues right now absolutely are a crisis. There isn’t a solution within the squad. People just get weirdly insecure over that word in the same way Arsenal fans do when it’s suggested that they “bottled” the league. They’re just words at the end of the day, and both accurate.

A crisis is having 2nd division Scottish players in your team or not having enough money to pay your players and staff or about to enter administration or even getting dicked by Arsenal 6 nil at home and deserving to be.
Even IF you think that players are past it, we now have resources to address that issue.

In the cold light of day we are 2nd in the league, with more than 2 thirds of the season left. We laugh when the press award the title to Liverpool in December and Arsenal in March and then we win it by 5 points in May so I will wait until the end of the season to assess where we are, but accept that some are deeper down the hole.

Haha,
I've just asked AI why we've been shit recently & got an answer which isn't far wrong.

Manchester City's recent poor form, losing five consecutive games, can be attributed to a combination of factors:

1. Injuries and Squad Depth: Key players like Rodri, Bobb, Jack Grealish, Ruben Dias, and John Stones have been unavailable due to injuries, weakening City's usual dominance in both midfield and defense. Additionally, their replacements have lacked the experience and quality of former squad members like Riyad Mahrez and Joao Cancelo.

2. Defensive Vulnerabilities: City's defense has struggled against counter-attacks and early opposition goals, with issues in the current setup. Pep Guardiola’s preferred tactics and formations have been less effective due to the personnel available, leading to gaps that opponents have exploited.

3. Poor Performances in Key Matches: Recent losses include a 4–1 defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League and a 4–0 loss to Tottenham in the Premier League. Both games showcased a lack of composure and inefficiency in both attack and defense, compounded by missed opportunities, such as Erling Haaland’s failed penalty against Sporting.

4. Opposition Tactics and Quality: Teams like Sporting and Brighton utilized effective strategies to disrupt City's rhythm. For instance, Sporting targeted City's defensive frailties, and Brighton outworked them in critical moments.

This slump highlights a rare period of vulnerability for Guardiola's side, though his record suggests that tactical adjustments and player returns could help them recover soon.

From an objective point of view, Pep stayed for another 2 years because the club don't know who to appoint next. Txiki was hired in his role, as the owners knew 2 things, 1. He could get Pep to the club as they're close friends, and 2. He could build a squad for Pep having done that before in the past. That makes the signing of the new deal after Viana has agreed even more unusual.

I know people won't want to hear this, but I think the owners would have wanted a similar model which would be - Hire Viana, Hire a Manager he's worked successfully with - Amorim. That can't happen for the time being, so Pep now has effectively become an interim in a new project. Is Pep Viana's man? Probably not as he was Txiki's man and Txiki is moving on. If Txiki's next club is right you can see Pep following him to wherever that is. The next decision is what is the sporting direction of the club? Again that was driven by Txiki and Pep and goes right through the first team down into the academy. What happens when Viana comes in? Does he continue what has been working even though it's not "his way", or does he try and implement "his way". If he does, then you could end up with a lack of synergy, and something of a clash of styles if Viana and Pep aren't on the same page. It also effects recruitment too. At some point as well for a smooth transition, players will need to be recruited for the next manager, and his style of play. That means Pep ends up with players that aren't his players as he knows he's leaving. Only way it goes smoothly is if the next manager has a very similar style of play to Pep or has worked with him. I think it ends up being Kompany, but he probably wants to commit to Bayern for longer than a year. From an outsiders point of view he'll win stuff in the next 2 years, but it just won't be as plain sailing.

Yes we are in a mini crisis

In this slump we've conceded 14 goals and scored only 4, that isn't normal for us.

Confidence is low, recruitment been dire, ageing squad, injuries to key players, square pegs in round holes.

We've got a tough run of fixtures coming up, get through December, sign a couple of quality players early January and we go again. I think the league is out of the equation this season, but still 2 cups we can have a good run at.
