This is what happens when the squad is unbalanced and too old....the latter caused by bring too successful, it's too easy to think we'll just let them rumble on, they're winning so no big need to change.

That being said yesterday even with no midfield it was fine margins and 4-0 wasn't a fair indication of the game.

I think we saw yesterday a big part of the reason why Pep has extended for 2 years. It is an acceptance that we (he) was too loyal to certain ageing and increasingly injury prone players, and fair play to him, he is intending to stick around to see the rebuild through. Looking back, the warning signs were clear to see in the cup final, losing to an awful Utd side, with half the team looking like they were on the beach. The nettle will be grasped now, there will be a clear out and we will come again. Getting top 4 this year will be a big achievement if we can manage it, but either way, we will come again. As supporters we must not turn on the players who have delivered so much, and in particular, let’s not destroy our own youngsters like Phil and Rico.

Let's face it, it's OVER! In a very similar way to all dominant sides before, ours has aged and wilted. We have failed dramatically in our squad planning, and our best players have long gone sour.
KDB, Bernardo, Gundogan, Walker, and even Stones. Everyone of them is either passed it, or cannot play without getting injured.

Across the rest of those who play, there is simply no leadership, defending is an after thought, and the squad is devoid of pace or energy.

Yes there are some eye catchers like Doku and Savinho, but they flatter to deceive and their final product isn't great. Others like Foden and Gvardiol are clearly good players, but get caught up in the mediocrity that surrounds them.

Rico Lewis is not a David Silva replacement, and as much as I admire the energy shown by Nunes, he is a loose canon.

And then there is Haaland, logic cannot sensibly explain to me how any player can score so many goals, but actually be so shit at finishing chances.

All of the above however, are just the symptoms. The actual problem is the management. They have become stale and have failed to adapt the team in good time to avoid this decline.
Sadly it has now gone passed the tinkering stage, and I am not sure Guardiola has the energy or desire to strip this down and rebuild it, and as such I firmly believe he will depart after the World Club Cup next summer.

I posted this 3 weeks back, and it's 100% true. What really worries me now is Guardiola renewing and attempting to plough on with tired methodologies using 'has-been' players! We are reaping the rewards of poor and insufficient recruitment, and a criminal failure to recognise academy talent that we've subsequently sold.

I've not read any comments on this thread, but I would suggest spending a billion for ONE trophy is nearer a crisis than losing a few games.

In his own sometimes cryptic fashion he has alluded to the fact that the side is now rife for a rebuild and even if he doesn't extend his current contract he wants to ensure the next manager has a better chance of success than Baconface left Manure with.

He knows the players probably better than they know themselves , he knows that a number of them well documented on this forum and in general have served out their time. Asking the likes of Walker to stay on for one more year most likely KDB , John Stones and bringing back Gundy when he knew and Gundy knows he is struggling to stand up to the rigors of the premier league now demonstrate clearly he knew we were about to fall off the perch and maybe in a fairly big way if missing out on Chumps League qualifies as a big fall.

Of course he didn't plan for the injuries particularly Bobb and Rodri however when you have an aging and small squad compared to some of your rivals and you want to have success in all competitions something has to eventually give and this season it has.

Our performances have been well below the standards set in the past and we already 5 points behind our points tally last season after 12 games.

The most troubling thing for me is that we do not have the physicality to cope. Gundo in midfield pointing at his runner to ask someone else to follow them (a number of times). Phil so easily brushed off. Every mistake we make gets punished because there is a lack of defensive intensity (and I don't just mean the back 4). Yet we don't give our youngsters a chance. Maybe Pep can see what is going to make the difference and turn things round in the short term but this morning, I can't.
