“Project Restart Table” Final Top Ten

Leicester handed their CL spot on a plate to Man Utd.

Not sure what Rogers was playing at... but it wasn't football. :-(

Things to note:

1) We seem to be a bit closer to our actual level, albeit not quite there. Although not quite there is a 90+ point season, so it's not too bad. Having Laporte back seems to be a big help.

2) Liverpool have dropped 10 points in 9 games knowing they had the league sorted. This is the 1st time we haven't seen them hyper motivated in 2 seasons. They haven't ground results out like before. So how motivated they are next season could be interesting.

3) United look better than previous. They have a lot of players who can shoot well and they have good creativity coming from the likes of Pogba, Referee, and Fernandes. The questions for next season are can they keep it up for a whole season and how will they fare against actual good teams, unlike the ones they've been playing lately.

4) Beware Jose. He's a significantly better and more experienced manager than Lampard, Arteta, and Mr Ole all are and he has a pedigree of winning. Tottenham have good enough players for him to work with and they've started grinding out results they hadn't done for a while. Not league contenders, but I rate them as strong top 4 contenders.

5) Imagine a worse version of City. On a good day very good mostly. Less skilled at controlling games for 90 minutes. Generally worse players. More likely to concede chances and more likely to make a mess of dealing with them. Generally weaker mentality. Less experienced manager. That's Arsenal.

6) Lampard is like a fancier Eddie Howe. Can get his team playing really nice and good football but doesn't seem to believe in defensive coaching by the looks of it. They'll be like City next season and almost never draw a game. They'll either blow away the opposition with their attacking prowess or wilt.

7) Leicester can fuck off. I hope they enjoy the fixture pileup.

8) Southampton could be the new Burnley and push for 7th next season. They'll have bad patches to iron out the good runs of form.

9) Wolves could probably threaten the top 4 if they splash out on a bit more quality. I don't see them doing that this season.

We have played some lovely stuff since the restart. There have been a great many positives and not too many things to worry about:

  • Phil has proper broken through and can now consider himself as one of our go to players
  • Raz has returned to something close to his proper form
  • Cancelo seems finally to be integrating with the squad and not showing Pep so much of his 'bad face'.
  • Kevin is a force of nature and the frightening thing for others is that he can be better
  • David played at the top of his game and bowed out of the PL like the legend he is.
  • Eddie fully deserves the Golden Glove for his massive contribution to the team.
  • Pep seems to be fully up for it

On the other side;
  • we need a world class CB and an Ake. Stones and Otamendi should be allowed to leave. Garcia and Toisin retained.
  • I still think we dont know the best option to replace Fern in dm. I actually prefer Gundo to Rodri in that position but neither of them offer the protection that Fern does
  • I know we score a bucketload of goals but that doesn't hide the fact that in a couple of games we have struggled to make decent chances. We have been reduced to throwing in high crosses for our massive forward line. We have the best crosser in world football in Kev. It seems logical that we look at a forward that has more presence in the air. I really would have loved to see Edin in this team

Can we have a goal difference higher than the goals we score - the goals against would have to be minus, this is one for Stephen Hawking's smarter brother Norman.
I said a higher goal difference “than the total number of goals we ended up scoring”, referring to what *actually* happened this the season. It was an extrapolation comparison between what could have been (+114 GD) and what was (102 GF) to illustrate how good our scoring/defending form was after the restart (that if we had that form throughout the season we would have scored so many and let in so few that our GD alone would have been better than the actual goals scored we ended up with for the full season).

I see now I should have been more clear with the wording.

This is one for Brian Cox’s smarter brother Richard. ;-)

Well, that's cleared it up then - I'm going playing with my Plasticine now.

You are professor Stanley Unwin and I claim my £5 ;-)

It's going to be interesting to see how we (Saints) start next season after the restart we had this one.
Expectation will be higher now that brings more pressure on the players. Perhaps there may be knock on effect to give them the belief they will need, with a bit of luck.
Hopefully Liverpool will carry on the form they ended on rather than the form they started with!

Funny enough, I do have a double first in maths and jibber-jabber. ;-)

The two games we lost we should really have won.... especially the Southampton game where we had 31 shots on goal and 74% possession

Those two games and Arsenal in the s/f were the story of our season. It doesn't take a genius to work out what the problems are and Pep will sort it out this summer

It was like listening to Will Hay in Windbag the sailor trying to work out their position at sea.
I wouldn’t be that hard on yourself, mate, you gave it go, and that’s all that matters...
