1 | James Trafford - 2025/26

You said he signed up to compete with Eddie in his last year and signing Donna was not part of the deal.

Simple question. Prove it with facts, not beliefs
Logic follows the chronology. Trafford signed for us on 29 July 2025 . On 11 August 2025, Donnarumma was left out of the PSG squad for the 2025 UEFA Super Cup after the arrival of new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. The following day, Donnarumma announced that he would be departing from the French club as a result of being left out

So you agree, you don’t know for sure

Like I'm not sure the sun will rise tomorrow or the Pope is a catholic?
So, Trafford ‘thought’ he could compete with the most decorated goalkeeper in PL history, but will run away at the thought of competing with ‘can’t catch a cross and is shit with his feet’ Donnarumma? Surely he’s not that weak?

That's about it but I don't agree that he's 'weak' - just realistic to move on if he wants to play as first choice enough to get the England shirt.

That’s just the way you’re framing it, I can do that too, watch:

Trafford, championship goalkeeper of the year, with a record number of clean sheets, and touted to be England’s future number 1 most likely was confident against Ederson.

Ederson who had a year remaining on his contract and had shown obvious signs of decline and fight, already having lost his place in the side at times last season to a feller who is now our 4th choice goalkeeper.

Trafford may not feel that the fight is as equal against Donnnaruma, who is touted as the worlds best goalkeeper, has just dragged his team to a CL final victory and has signed at the age of 26, on a 5 year deal for big money.

There's probably a difference though in that Ederson has one year on his contract and it may well of been sold to Trafford that learn from Ederson this season and when his contract expires in a year you should be the new number 1. With Donna signing a 5 year contract, it may well make him question his decision for the long term. All that really matters for me is we have 2 very good keepers and if in 12 months time Trafford wants out then so be it. We'd most likely get our money back if not more.

I just hope you haven’t been moaning about our transfer business of the last few years then because, by that logic, you’ll never displace KDB, Foden, Bernado and Rodri so might as well not bother.

Not only that, but Ederson might have had a blinding season and signed a new contract!

I’m extremely happy with Donnaruma, but the likely scenario is that Trafford signed without knowing that was going to happen and it’s okay to feel for the lad as circumstances have changed and he has very little chance of being our number 1.

Also, competition for goalkeeping is very different to any other position in the side.

You are likely right but I hope Trafford has a bit more about hime than legging off at the first available opportunity.
Ortega has played 25 PL games in 3 seasons (and 31 cup ties) but last year got his first call up to the senior German team, so maybe Trafford will hang around a bit longer.

Feel for the kid but also think he’s too good to be a back up considering Donna is only 26 in my opinion the club bought him so that we could sell him on for maybe double the price

James Trafford has been around the club for long enough to know that we dine at the top table. We can argue chronology and we can argue about specific players, but he will have ALWAYS known that he would be competing for his place and has to deliver elite performances. That remains the case.

Despite that, I would have liked Traff as No.1. It's sentiment - I love the promotion of academy players and believe that it tells other young players that they have a chance - and I also think he has huge potential. I hope that he takes the challenge on board. He is a very young keeper at this level, and can learn from the best and reach past that level.
